You will have noticed that this is my third Dostoevsky work in a row, and I tell you that if Crime and Punishment was an axe driven into conscience, and The Brothers Karamazov a universal judgment on the human soul, Memoirs from the Underground is the stab you give yourself in the darkness of your own room, and it hurts more because there are no witnesses, no crime, and no redemption.
I came to this novel thinking that, being short, it would give me a breather after the two previous tomes. It was clearly a colossal mistake, because it is the sharpest, the most uncomfortable, and the one with the least fiction. Dostoevsky wrote this in 1864, but he could have written it yesterday for some stranger’s social media account who spends all day arguing why everything is shit and he is the only one who understands it.

The narrator is that man from the underground, a former official who has retired and spends his days locked up, writing a feverish monologue, and the first sentence is already a punch: "I am a sick man... I am a wicked man. I am an unpleasant man." There are no heroes here, not even charismatic antiheroes; there is just a guy who has become his own executioner and enjoys it with a honesty that is disgusting.
What struck me most is how Dostoevsky mocks reason, because in the middle of the nineteenth century, with positivism at its peak, everyone believed that logic and science would lead us to a perfect world. A Crystal Palace where everything would be calculated, clean, and in order, but the underground man shouts: What if I do not want that palace? What if I prefer my dirty corner because at least there I can be free?

This is not about political freedom; it is about the freedom to be stupid, contradictory, irrational, and self-destructive. And let us be honest, who has not sometimes preferred their own poison over the medicine offered to them?
The most brutal part comes in the second half. There the abstract philosopher becomes an awkward and pathetic young man who tries to relate to the world and is a disaster. We see him obsessing over an officer who ignores him, dragging himself to a dinner with former colleagues who despise him, and having an encounter with Liza, a prostitute whom he tries to "save" from a ridiculous arrogance, only to humiliate her when she offers him compassion. The scene is so real, so uncomfortably human, that I almost had to close the book for a moment.

Reading this is forced therapy, the kind you did not ask for. We all have a bit of his resentment, his envy, and his inability to be happy when things go well.
When I finished, I understood that this book is the key to his entire universe. Without it, Raskolnikov is just a murderer, and Alyosha Karamazov is a saint. Memoirs from the Underground is a black hole in miniature, and once you enter, you do not come out the same.
