A surprisingly lackluster run was actually a warning about incoming illness

The other day I was feeling good and had plans to meet someone for coffee at 3 so I had to get my run in at what is probably a pretty stupid time of day to get a run in, at noon.

Sure it is getting cooler here but that it still the hottest time of day.

When I was doing the run I felt ok, but I was also kind of running out of a steam a lot faster than I normally would and this felt kind of odd to me. When the watch let me know that we were on km number 4 I actually started to get angry because as is usually the case, the last kilometer is always the longest one. This one seemed particularly long and I was cursing the gods for making this 1km feel like 3 and a half.

I know that I'm not exactly captain fitness but a 7.5 minute per km pace is bad for me. When you look at that average heart rate it makes it even worse. At that BPM I should be doing these at least a minute per km faster.

I spent almost the entire time in anaerobic and at this pace this really shouldn't be the case. I was really perplexed about this and since my meeting was with one of my fitness buddies that afternoon I figured we would talk about it.

It was kind of funny because he didn't really have any insight to give me but he did mention and ask whether or not I have been feeling sick. I don't want to blame the guy because the power of suggestion isn't that strong with me, but I started feeling a bit feverish even before we were done with our coffees. I initially blamed it on overheating, heat exhaustion if you will.

Later on that night I had a full on fever that was a full sinus infection by the following afternoon.

So I guess I was kind of pleased that this was the reason for my lack of performance on the track. My body was letting me know that hey, we are going to be shutting down soon!

I don't know if it is considered bad for you to exercise when you are approaching illness but I honestly didn't feel that way until after the run and was sitting at the cafe.

I'm a relatively healthy person with a decent diet and good exercise regimen but I was kind of surprised how quickly I went from being totally ready to do a 5k in the mid-day sun to barely being able to get out of bed. Illness is no joke that is for sure. I don't think that being fit has a huge effect on how sick you get. Maybe it just prevents you from getting sick as frequently.

I haven't exercised in 3 days now. I have no energy for that and have mostly just been in bed drinking water and tea. I have no appetite and I would be wiling to bet that I am losing more weight from being sick than I would be from exercising and eating right. lol

I'd much rather be well, that is for sure.

Any of you fitness people out there ever had your body warn you about an incoming illness?

H! In the past, whenever I felt a bit under the weather and thought I was coming down with something, going for a run sometimes worked for me and the illness just went away. Maybe it's because I sweated out the germs? However, I don't think it's an ideal solution, and as I've gotten older, I don't do it anymore. If I don't feel well, I don't run. An athlete is definitely more resilient than a non-athlete. For example, I run in the winter, breathe cold air, get rained on, and sometimes feel freezing, which probably toughens the body up quite a bit. I can't even remember the last time I was sick—like really, properly sick. I don't count mild colds.

  • This is actually quite common and why there is the saying you have to listen to your body, Funny how this ends up like this and it happens so quickly. I am always blindsided and never notice these warning signs because just feeling tired does not necessarily mean you are coming down with something either.

I'm not sure I've had a run warn me of illness, but it definitely affects performance. I think it can still be good to get out even if you take it gently. Hope you feel better soon.
