How many times have I looked. into the mirror and quietly asked myself, "Why am I here in this world? What is my true purpose?" If I am being completely honest, I have lost count.
Growing up, I often felt like an observer in my own life. I watched people around me move with absolute certainty some knew their career paths from childhood, while others commanded rooms with natural ease. For a long time, I felt like a wanderer without a compass, constantly searching for a grand, cinematic purpose that never seemed to arrive. It wasn't until I stumbled across the profound truth behind the words, "Identify your talent, and your purpose will reveal itself," that everything changed for me.
My Misconception of "Talent"
For years, I made the mistake of thinking a "talent" had to be something spectacular or commercially profitable—like singing perfectly on a stage or being a mathematical genius. Because I didn't possess those specific, loud gifts, I assumed I didn’t have any talents at all. And without talent, how could I ever find my purpose?
But as I grew and began paying closer attention to the quiet .moments in my life, I realized that talents can be beautifully made My talent wasn't an explosive performance art. My talent was deep empathy, the ability to truly listen, and expressing thoughts through words. I found that I had a natural gift for holding safe spaces for people and offering comfort when they felt broken. It was what has been helping me with patients in hospital.
When Purpose Revealed Itself
The moment I identified and accepted this gentle gift as a genuine talent, the existential doubtfinally cleared. My purpose didn't arrive with a loud trumpet blast; it revealed itself naturally through the things I was already drawn to do. In the hospital. I so many times talk to patients going through difficulty of life. Feeling hopeless an I provided hope an comfort for them.
I realized I am not here to change the entire world all at once. My purpose is to use my voice, my empathy, and my words to uplift the people around me whether that is supporting a friend through a dark time, volunteering, or empowering other patients right here in this community.
To every person reading this who is still looking at the mirror and wondering why he/she is here: stop looking for a massive, pre-written destiny. Look inward instead. What comes naturally to you? What is that quiet strength people always thank you for? Identify that small spark of talent, embrace it, and watch how beautifully your purpose unfolds.
