I’ve read a few books by this author, and I really like his work because he always brings together various genres. Suspense, thrillers, realism, mystery, action, and science fiction are just some of the themes Kevin explores in his literary works; plus, his writing is aimed at a young adult audience, which makes it even more relevant, since this audience is quite discerning.
Speaking a little more about Kevin: his works are raw, and because of the realism he brings to them, he naturally gets right to the point. On the other hand, his narrative draws us as readers so deeply into the plot that, without even realizing it, we become one of the protagonists. This is true—because when I read IBOY, every letter and every word made me mimic the characters’ gestures. And this is possible because of that realism and that cinematic quality; in short, the story becomes vivid in our minds. This book has that effect, and with its combination of suspense, thriller, action, science fiction, and mystery, in my view, it’s a work that transcends the young adult genre to appeal to any audience. I imagine that’s why the book served as the basis for a movie—which, by the way, I need to watch to compare it to the book.

There are many characters in the story, but I liked how Kevin Brooks managed to make the moments involving Tom Harvey and Lucy Walker feel very real. Now, as we begin to enjoy the book, we see Tom as a quiet, submissive boy who is in love with Lucy but doesn’t dare to say so. Both live in a London apartment complex controlled by gangs; crime is rampant, and they can’t escape that reality. During the story, Lucy and her brother are attacked; Lucy is assaulted, no one knows about it, and in any case, no one dares to speak up. Simply put, Brooks narrates the events in a raw and grotesque manner.
Now, Tom is completely unaware of what’s going on and is on his way to visit his tempestuous girlfriend, Lucy; however, before he reaches her apartment, a fantastic and brutal event occurs—an unexpected accident in which a cell phone falls from a great height and lands right on Tom’s head. The phone is completely destroyed, but several fragments remain lodged inside Tom’s head. He is rushed to the hospital and falls into a coma. After a few days, he recovers and learns what happened, as well as what happened to Lucy. Following his recovery, strange things begin to happen, but Tom realizes he has become a sort of tech superhero. He has gained the ability to intercept all kinds of technological communications, and with that, he begins his revenge.
Finding himself with all that power, he has only one goal: to track down the gang members. To do so, Tom must act alone and carefully calculate each of his moves; he investigates, hacks devices and networks, jams communications, and makes life miserable for the gang. What’s impressive is that as we read on, the tension builds more and more; Tom’s power knows no bounds, and in our minds we picture that marvelous iSkin armor, which is pure energy. All of this forces us to reflect on how we might use a certain kind of power without abusing it simply for the sake of revenge.
By the way, as I read this book, I can’t help but think of that line Grandpa said to Peter Parker: “With great power comes great responsibility.” In this case, every step Tom takes brings consequences that make him question his own morality. On the other hand, I really like the realistic feel of the story and the way it addresses the trauma the characters are going through. There are no magical resolutions or easy ways out here; on the contrary, the process Lucy must go through to heal is impressive. Hablando un poco más de Kevin; sus obras son crudas y por el realismo que imprime, lógicamente va directo al grano. Por otra parte; su narrativa hace que nosotros como lectores nos adentremos tanto en la trama, que sin querer nos convertimos en uno de los protagonistas. Esto es cierto; porque cuando leí IBOY, cada letra y cada palabra hacía que yo hiciera gestos simulando la narrativa. Y esto es posible, por ese realismo y esa calidad que parece cinematográfica; en pocas palabras, la lectura se vuelve gráfica en nuestra mente. Este libro causa ese efecto y con esa combinación de suspenso, thriller, acción, ciencia ficción y misterio; desde mi punto de vista, es una obra que transciende de lo juvenil hacia cualquier público. Me imagino que por ello, el libro fue tomado como base para la creación de una película; que por cierto, debo verla para establecer una comparación con respecto al libro.

Dentro de la temas existen muchos personajes; pero me gustó como Kevin Brooks, logró que se sintieran muy reales los momentos donde intervienen Tom Harvey y Lucy Walker. Ahora; cuando comenzamos a disfrutar la lectura, vemos a Tom como un chico tranquilo, sumiso y que está enamorado de Lucy pero no se atrave a decirlo. Ambos viven en un conjunto de apartamentos de Londres, controlado por bandas; la delincuencia es ferrea y ellos no escapan a esa realidad. Durante la acción; Lucy y su hermano son atacados, Lucy es ultrajada, nadie lo sabe y de todas maneras nadie se atrave a abrir la boca. Sencillamente; los hechos son narrados por Brooks de una manera cruda y grotesca.
Ahora, Tom no está enterado de nada y va a visitar a su amor tormentoso Lucy; sin embargo, antes de llegar a su apartamento, ocurre un hecho fantástico y brutal, un accidente insospechado donde un teléfono cae desde muy alto y justamente aterriza en la cabeza de Tom. El equipo se destruye totalmente, pero varios fragmentos han quedado dentro de la cabeza de Tom quien es trasladado al hospital y ha caído en coma. Luego de unos días se recupera y se entera de lo sucedido, además de lo que le ocurrió a Lucy. Tras su recuperación, empiezan a suceder cosas raras, pero Tom se da cuenta que se ha convertido en una especie de super héroe tecnológico. Ha adquirido la capacidad de interceptar todo tipo de comunicación tecnológica y con ello inicia la venganza.
Al verse con todo ese poder, tiene una sola meta y es la de encontrar a los integrantes de la banda. Para ello; Tom debe estar solo y tiene que calcular muy bien cada uno de sus pasos, investiga, hackea dispositivos, redes, interfiere comunicaciones y le hace la vida imposible a la pandilla. Algo impresionante; es que a medida que vamos leyendo, la tensión crece más y más; Tom no tiene límites con su poder y en nuestra mente nos imaginamos esa maravillosa armadura iSkin, la cual es pura energía. Todo esto nos obliga a internalizar sobre como podemos utilizar un cierto poder, sin llegar al abuso solo por venganza.
Por cierto; al leer este libro, sinceramente llega a mi mente aquella frase que el abuelo le dijo a Peter Parker; un gran poder, conlleva a una gran responsabilidad. En este caso; cada paso que da Tom, trae consigo consecuencias que hacen cuestionar su propia moral. Por otra parte; me gusta mucho el sentir realista de la obra y el enfoque que se le da al trauma que viven los personajes. Aquí no hay desenlaces mágicos ni salidas fáciles; por el contrario, el proceso que debe cumplir Lucy para sanar es impresionante; en definitiva, aquí notamos una combinación maravillosa entre la ciencia ficción y el drama resiliente entre Tom y Lucy.
