Although the film we’re analyzing today is certainly a thriller, it’s also steeped in deep drama—and as you know, I’m not the kind of person who sits glued to the screen just to enjoy moments when relatively nothing is happening. That said, I also feel that, even without knowing anything about the plot, there was something—that certain something—that drew me in, and honestly, I watched it from start to finish. I don’t regret it, because the story conveys profound messages—some hidden, others plain to see. I’m talking about Low Tide, released in 2019. It’s a film that really grabs you from the very first moment, because we don’t know what happened to their friendship in a hostile world marked by inequality and that harsh transition into adulthood. What seemed like a simple summer could have become the trigger for something much worse for everyone.
Low Tide, written and directed by Kevin McMullin, a filmmaker whose approach is to subtly explore themes such as the loss of innocence, friendship, and the way hasty decisions are made—decisions that completely change the course of the story. What’s important about the director’s choices is that things aren’t revealed abruptly, much less through long dialogues; on the contrary, revealing glances and well-placed silences are the key elements that lend the plot that touch of suspense and drama.
All of this leads to hostile reactions, causing everything the protagonists have built to crumble completely; secrets will be the cornerstone that proves just how strong their friendship is. Even with its deep sense of drama, I enjoyed this film because of the message it conveys and the way it makes us think about how events will unfold; here, you don’t know what’s going to happen, which leaves room for speculation on our part, and naturally, we inevitably find ourselves fully immersed in the story.
"Low Tide" isn't a story about young people enjoying the summer after a long school year; these young people experience summer as a kind of freedom—some to do good and work, like Peter (Jaeden Martell), Alan's brother—a hardworking, gentle boy who lost his mother but remains steadfast in his beliefs; he's very intelligent, which leads him to take incredible actions. Alan (Keean Johnson) is more vulnerable but tenacious, a dreamer and impulsive, which leads him to take actions that could endanger the family.

Now, they need to pull off another heist at the cabin of a man who has already passed away; Smitty is injured and can’t take part. In this case, there’s no other choice, so Alan takes his brother Peter with him; they arrive on the other side of the island and start stealing; the brothers find a sort of treasure, which they hide from Red. Suddenly, the police arrive; it seems someone is a snitch. Red escapes in the boat, leaving Peter to fend for himself; Alan has been arrested and is interrogated with the intention of getting him to turn in Red, who appears to be not just a thief but something more. Peter’s intelligence knows no bounds—he hides the treasure and takes only one item with him; Peter manages to make his way back as best he can.
It turns out that this treasure is worth a lot, and it will be the cause of major conflicts among the friends—friends who begin to doubt one another; money is worth more than anything else. Alan and Peter, without the others knowing, go to a pawn shop, pawn that part of the treasure, and manage to get a large sum of money; then Alan’s greed is so great that he makes another trade specifically to buy a car; this, of course, piques everyone’s curiosity—where did Alan get all that money for it if he didn’t have a single penny to his name? Summer ceases to be a season of friendship and turns into the agony of wanting what the other person has; no one knows who to trust.
Life is just like the title suggests: when the tide is high, everything remains hidden without a hitch, life goes on, and people carry on with their daily routines. However, when the tide goes out, everything is laid bare and the darkest intentions emerge, with the aim of destroying one another; you can’t trust anyone, especially when it comes to money; because those who don’t have it crave it madly, and those who do just want to have more. Without a doubt, money completely changes people’s emotions, because friendship has its limits when there is deceit and material possessions that should have been shared. Friendship is fleeting and self-serving—that’s what we see in Low Tide; it’s every man for himself.
In short, the film is set in spectacular locations; the town is beautiful, the island incredible—elements that combine with the stillness of the night to create a magical contrast. The town serves as a spacious setting where the action unfolds seamlessly. The characters, the plot, the atmosphere, and the events—all of these elements together convey a very profound message about the meaning of friendship and how it can be corrupted by external factors. This suggests that true friendship can never exist when it is conditioned by orders and mistreatment. Simply put, they believe they are friends because they think they want the same things; take care, and see you soon.

Lo importante de las acciones de dirección, es que las cosas no se descubren de manera abrupta, mucho menos a través de largos diálogos; al contrario, las miradas que delatan y los silencios cuando deben existir, son los elementos claves que le dan ese toque de suspenso y drama a la trama.
Todo esto conlleva a reacciones hostiles, haciendo que todo lo que han construido los protagonistas se desmorone por completo; donde los secretos serán el pilar fundamental, para demostrar que tan fuerte es la amistad entre ellos. Un filme que aun con su carga profunda de drama, me ha gustado por el mensaje que transmite y por la forma en que nos hace pensar sobre el desarrollo de otras acciones; aquí no sabes lo que va a suceder, por lo que da paso a las especulaciones de nuestra parte y lógicamente; de forma inevitable nos metemos de lleno en la historia.

Ahora; se necesita dar otro golpe en una cabaña de un hombre que ya ha fallecido; Smitty está lesionado y no puede participar. En este caso no hay más remedio y Alan se lleva a su hermano Peter; llegan a la otra parte de a isla, empiezan a robar; los hermanos encuentran una especie de tesoro, cosa que esconden de Red. Lo cierto es; que al enterarse los demás, ese tesoro funciona como una bomba y será el detonate de acciones siguientes muy locas y desmedidas, generando mucha tensión en la trama; trama que les digo, me cautivó por completo, ya que no soy amante de ellas; ya el verano deja de ser una estación entre amigos, para pasar a la agonía de querer lo que el otro tiene; nadie sabe en quien confiar.
La vida es como el título; cuando la marea está alta, todo se encuentra oculto sin problemas, la vida sigue y las personas continúan con lo cotidiano. Sin embargo; cuando la marea baja, todo se puede descubrir y las más oscuras intenciones emergen, con el fin de destruirse unos a los otros; no se puede confiar en nadie, más un si se trata de dinero; porque los que no tienen, lo desean con locura y los que tienen; solo quien tener más. Definitivamente; el dinero cambia por completo las emociones de las personas, porque la amistad tiene sus límites cuando existe engaño y cosas materiales que debieron ser compartidas. La amistad es efímera e interesada, es lo que vemos en Marea Baja, sálvese quien pueda.
En fin; el filme se desarrolla en locaciones espectaculares; el pueblo es hermoso, la isla increíble; elementos que se combinan con la quietud de la noche para ofrecer un contraste mágico. El pueblo funciona como un entorno amplio, donde se generan las acción sin ningún tipo de problemas. Los personajes, la trama, el ambiente y las acciones; todo en conjunto deja un mensaje muy profundo sobre el sentido de la amistad y como esta se puede corrompoer por factores externos. Esto indica, que jamás hay amistad cuando la misma está condicionada por órdenes y malos tratos.
