Is It Normal?

image.png

I've published two posts now with Is It Normal? themes. The inspiration for these themes originated in an assignment for my homeopathic studies. For that exercise, we students were tasked with coming up with completions to the phrase "is it normal" for the rest of us to determine whether or not the conditions were pathological - did the conditions need treatment, or could they be healthily tolerated?

In the comment sections on my previous posts, most readers seemed to interpret "normal" as meaning "conventional." The question then becomes, which of our conventional behaviors are, in fact, pathological? Would the world be healthier if we could cure humans of these conditions?

Which of the conditions below do you consider to be pathological - in need treatment - or healthy?

is it normal to feel alone in a room full of people?

is it normal to think dandelions are ugly?

is it normal to have full faith without expectations?

text15.png

is it normal to think your government is your friend?

text15.png

is it normal to be enchanted by a sales pitch?

text15.png

is it normal to sign contracts for life?

text15.png

is it normal to be dazzled by politicians?

text15.png

is it normal to have a face that cries out for a fist in it?

Two of these came to me while I was in my garden. One is a translation of a German word. The remaining five are, in my opinion, truly pathological, and would be found in a homeopathic repertory under the rubric DELUSIONAL.

Prizes await those who can correctly identify which of my little poems fit those bills. In other words, do you think like me?

  • Delusional: 4,5,and 7 for sure. #3 and #6 are an "it depends" thing. #1 happens sometimes, but I don't think it requires treatment, unless it's ongoing. #2 is strictly an opinion. #8 doesn't make sense to me, so I can't say. If someone is born with a certain kind of face that some people find offensive, it's not their fault. On the other hand,if someone who goes around thinking certain faces need a fist inserted into them, that's pathological.

  • Brilliant.

    1. To feel alone in a room full of people is human. Not pathological. The soul’s birthright.
    2. To think dandelions are ugly is more of an aesthetic failure, but common enough to be “normal.” Still mildly pathological.
    3. To have full faith without expectations is rare and beautiful.
    4. To think your government is your friend is deeply delusional.
    5. To be enchanted by a sales pitch is pathological in today's world.
    6. To sign contracts for life, I suppose it depends on the contract.
    7. To be dazzled by any politician would be acute pathology.
    8. To have a face that cries out for a fist in it. This one leans more towards cultural observation than pathology.

I’m thinking the five that are pathological are 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8. 2 feels like a subjective human variance, 3 sounds like grace. I love how you're using poetry this way, very creative!

If we could cure people of conditions numbers 3-7, I think the world would certainly be healthier. I probably think in a similar way to you that, to quote Miss Jane from one of my favourite movies Mr. Deeds goes to town (1936), "everyone's pixilated except us'

    I don't know what's normal. I think I know what's healthy, and it probably isn't this:

is it normal to have a face that cries out for a fist in it?

I laughed out loud at that one.

I'm sure I don't think like you, but I do like you :)))

I ask...  Is it Ethical?  "Normal" is so...  Vague.

I grasp that these questions are not about Ethics, per se, but maybe a better question would be, "Is it healthy?"

The first one, I would say, it is a poor choice to feel lonely.  We choose how We feel...   Choosing to Depress  (article):  https://peakd.com/@amaterasusolar/choosing-to-depress

As I read along, I had opinions about some of those things..... and then I saw it was a test and I no longer had opinions.
