Is AI Killing Music Production?

In this video, the creator discusses the perceived negative impact of AI on music production and the industry at large. He argues that while technological evolution is inevitable, the ease of using prompts to generate songs, plugins, and programs threatens the authentic, skill-based craft of music production (0:00-2:34).

Key takeaways from the video include:

• The Loss of Technical Growth: The creator highlights that traditional music production required a significant "climb" to learn tools like compressors, EQs, and musical theory. AI removes these barriers, allowing novices to "walk right in" without experience (3:09-5:00). • Lack of Vision and Originality: AI-generated music and plugins often sound repetitive and lack the "human vision" or emotional depth that comes from the struggle of the creative process (8:45-10:05). • The "Quick Profit" Problem: He criticizes those who use AI primarily to manipulate the market or create "clone" plugins to make easy money, rather than solving genuine creative problems (11:03-13:35). • Authenticity and Hardware: Drawing a parallel to the rise and fall of NFTs, the creator predicts that AI music may be a fad. He suggests that producers will eventually return to prioritizing human-driven processes and authentic hardware to protect the integrity of music (17:06-19:28, 25:19-26:12).

Despite his concerns, the creator concludes that the music production community is not dead; there remain many dedicated, real musicians committed to learning and creating music the "human way" (27:16-27:54).

Here is my response to the author's claims.

I’m a retired software engineer. I’ve seen the rapid pace of AI reduce the number of jobs in software. It is only getting worse. Particularly for new college graduates with computer science degrees, they are having a hard time finding jobs because of AI.

So what the music community is now feeling about AI and its ability to displace humans, it not unique. AI proliferation is happening in many fields.

For some of you in the music industry, will find a way to stay gainfully employed. For others, your opportunities to make a living in the music industry is decreasing very fast. Each of you must figure out which camp you are in before it’s too late.

As time goes on, I think listeners will not care if the music was created using AI and others will.

In any case, I think the market for music is big enough for both AI and human made music to co-exist.

    Let me know your thoughts.
