There are some cartoons you watch as a child and completely forget about as you grow older. Then there are those ones you can watch again years later and suddenly realize, wait... this thing was actually deep. 😅
And these is one of them. The problem is that Aang, the last Air Nomad and the Avatar, a person who is capable of mastering all four elements: air, water, earth and firehas been missing for 100 years, and during that time the Fire Nation has started a war against the other nations. When Aang finally returns, he discovers that the world he once knew has completely changed.
Now he has to learn the other three elements and eventually confront the Fire Lord.
What I really enjoyed about the series is that Aang doesn't behave like the typical powerful hero. He is still a child. He likes having fun and sometimes he is afraid of the responsibility that has been placed on him.
Another character that really impressed me was Zuko. At the beginning, I honestly saw him as just another villain who was determined to capture Aang. But as his story developed, I started understanding him differently.
Zuko wasn't simply looking for the Avatar. He was desperately trying to regain his father's respect and prove that he was worthy.
I think about how sometimes people spend so much time trying to become what others expect them to be that they forget to ask themselves who they actually want to become.
And then there is Uncle Iroh 😂.
Iroh was one of those characters who could make me laugh in one scene and give me something serious to think about in the next. His relationship with Zuko was one of the best relationships in the entire series.
Katara, Sokka and Toph didn't just follow Aang around. Each of them had their own personality, struggles and importance to the story.
You see from sokka that you don't need special powers to be useful. While everyone else was bending elements, he was using his brain, weapons and creativity. 😀
The animation may look simple compared to some of the newer animated shows, but I think the storytelling makes up for it completely. The bending fights were also really entertaining because each element had its own style and personality.
And honestly, I think that's why Avatar has remained popular for so long. I start the story with a group of young people travelling around the world, and by the end, I can clearly see how much they have changed. I watched it more than five times already and each time, I get to realize something. Where are those people that think cartoons are only for children, come and see for your self.
