Today is one of those days where you run into cats everywhere. In photos, memes, videos, and—of course—at home, where they act as if they were the rightful owners of the place. And since it’s Caturday, I couldn't pass up the chance to do something creative with one of the family’s kitties 😊.
The idea came to me while looking at a post by @splinterdany titled “I Made a Mandala Dog with AI 😅”, where they showed how they turned a dog's portrait into a mandala-style coloring image using artificial intelligence. I thought it was a charming concept: taking an everyday photo and transforming it into something you can print, paint, and even keep as a memento.
So I thought: “Well, if it works for a dog, why not try it with a cat?” After all, cats already look like works of art... though they also look like they’re plotting to take over the world.
From Black Cat to Mandala 🐾
For the experiment, I chose a photo of one of our cats. He’s a black cat looking straight at the camera with that serious expression that seems to say: “Human, don’t do anything weird with my image.”
But, of course, it was already too late.
I used Duck.ai, a free platform from DuckDuckGo that lets you chat with various AI models and work with images as well. That’s where I decided to try out GPT-6 Luna; I uploaded the photo and gave it this initial instruction:
“Acting as a creator of mandalas based on real photographs, transform the portrait of the black cat looking at the camera into a mandala-style coloring image; outline the design in black to define the mandala segments, using large mandala patterns for the background and intricate mandala details to fill the shape of the black cat.”
In simple terms: I asked it to take the portrait of the cat, turn it into a mandala design, and outline everything in black and white—like an image ready to be colored.
The result was quite good. The AI kept the cat's general shape—its ears, eyes, and whiskers—but filled its body with flowers, spirals, and small decorative patterns. Large mandalas appeared in the background, creating a sort of ornamental frame around the feline.
A colored version 💜💚
The black-and-white image already served its purpose. It could easily be printed out for some time spent with colored pencils, markers, or crayons. But as I looked at the result, I thought: "What if we ask for a finished version to use as a guide?"
So, I wrote a second prompt:
“Generate a version of the image where the cat's fill-in mandalas are colored in shades of violet, dark blue, and similar tones, while using light colors and green palettes for the mandalas in the background.”
The idea was simple: violet shades, dark blue, and similar colors for the cat; soft greens and light colors for the background.
And yes, it worked really well. The cat ended up with a combination of violets and blues that gives it a mysterious, almost magical air. Sort of like a cosmic guardian of the living room... though their biggest concern is surely still dinnertime 😹.
A simple idea to try out
What I liked most about this experience was how easy it was. You don't need to know how to draw mandalas or use complex software. All you need is a photo you like, a clear idea, and a willingness to experiment a little.
Plus, it can be a lovely activity for kids, a way to relax, a chance to create a personalized gift, or simply a way to see your pet take center stage in a unique illustration.
Today, it might have been a black cat turned into a mandala. Tomorrow, it could be another cat, a dog, a family photo, or even that plant you’re trying to keep alive with more faith than experience.
Ultimately, there’s something fun about these little AI experiments: they invite us to look at our own photos with fresh eyes. And if you end up with a coloring page in the process, it's even better! 🎨🐈

“Acting as a creator of mandalas based on real photographs, transform the portrait of the black cat looking at the camera into a mandala-style coloring image; outline the design in black to define the mandala segments, using large mandala patterns for the background and intricate mandala details to fill the shape of the black cat”.
“Generate a version of the image where the cat's fill-in mandalas are colored in shades of violet, dark blue, and similar tones, while using light colors and green palettes for the mandalas in the background”.
