Moby-Dick; or, The Whale:
I just finished Moby Dick. We all know the gist of the story, Ahab’s obsession with the White Whale. Maybe we’ve seen the Gregory Peck movie. That’s really all I had to go on before starting the book, not really knowing what to expect. I certainly didn’t know that the first hundred pages or so ashore before they set sail were such a hoot. Or that the mid-19th-century speech of the main characters would be filled with thee, thou, thy, wouldst, and see’st. So a bit of a slog for a modern reader.
