[Movie] My take on Superhero movie (Eng/Esp)

Today I wanted to break out of my routine and watch a different kind of movie that would help me forget the hardships of everyday life. With that in mind, I felt like watching Superhero Movie, a superhero movie parody released in 2008, featuring the late Leslie Nielsen, an actor who made several generations laugh.

I approached this film with great enthusiasm to see if its various absurd situations would give me a good time. Let me clarify that I enjoy comedy, but I prefer intelligent humor; I’ve found several films in the absurd subgenre—such as Where’s the Pilot?, Top Secret!, and Scary Movie—to be funny, but others in the same vein haven’t even managed to elicit a half-smile from me because they rely on typical American humor and cultural references. In this film, for example, there’s an overuse of exaggeration that undermines the main story and its subplots.

From the very beginning, you have to keep in mind that you’re in for some absurd humor, so nothing that happens should be approached logically. Superhero Movie starts out as a parody of Spider-Man and gradually incorporates references to the X-Men and The Fantastic Four—in other words, it borrows elements from the Marvel Universe to deliver jokes.

The story follows Rick Riker, a shy teenager who is bitten by a genetically modified dragonfly, granting him superpowers. Meanwhile, Lou Landers, a businessman and the uncle of one of Rick’s classmates, is searching for a cure for his terminal illness. After an experiment goes wrong, he realizes he can steal people’s life force by touching them, which restores his health at the rate of one victim per day. For this reason, he devises a plan to murder thousands and live forever.

It was written and directed by Craig Mazin, and stars Drake Bell, Sara Paxton, Christopher McDonald, and Leslie Nielsen. For me, the standout performances are Bell’s as Rick Riker—he brings a fresh energy to the film—and McDonald’s as the villain “Hourglass,” who serves as his foil; although this character lacked development, more could have been made of him. Of course, we can’t forget Nielsen as Uncle Albert—much of the comedic dialogue falls on him. His character is a parody of Peter Parker’s Uncle Ben. As for Paxton’s performance, I felt it was off the mark.

Personally, I think this movie is far from being one of the best in the genre; in fact, I think it rushes things too much and focuses on elements so absurd that, far from drawing the viewer in, you find yourself wondering what you’re even doing there. But regardless of any value judgments one might make, the film is designed to be mindless—even to make you forget any notion of logic or plausibility.

There are several moments in which unrelated scatological and sexual jokes are strung together. A cameo by Pamela Anderson adds some life to the film, but Kevin Hart’s presence in the cast ruins everything. This actor has been typecast in a single character to the point of becoming unpleasant. I admit I only chose this movie because of Nielsen, but even his presence, charisma, and comedic talent couldn’t completely save this film.

Hoy quería salirme de la rutina y ver una película diferente que me ayudara a olvidar las penurias de la cotidianidad. Con esto en mente, me antojé de Superhero Movie, una parodia de películas de superhéroes estrenada en el año 2008, que cuenta entre su elenco con el estelar Leslie Nielsen, actor ya desaparecido que arrancó risas a varias generaciones.

Con gran entusiasmo afronté este filme para comprobar si sus diversas situaciones absurdas me hacían pasar un buen rato. Aclaro que me agrada la comedia, pero con humor inteligente, me han hecho gracia varias propuestas del subgénero absurdo tales como ¿Dónde está el piloto?, Súper Secreto y Scary Movie, pero otras del mismo estilo no me han dejado ni media sonrisa debido a que se sustentan en el humor típico estadounidense y sus referentes culturales. En esta cinta por ejemplo se abusa de las exageraciones y se atenta contra la historia principal y sus tramas.

Desde el comienzo se debe tener presente que se va a digerir humor absurdo, por tanto, nada de lo que ocurre se debe abordar desde la lógica. Superhéroe Movie inicia como una parodia de Spider-Man y paulatinamente involucra referentes como los X Men o Los cuatro fantásticos, es decir, se apropia de una parcela del universo Marvel para soltar chistes.

Lo cierto es que Rick Riker es un adolescente retraído que es mordido por una libélula genéticamente modificada, a partir de este momento adquiere superpoderes. Mientras esto sucede, Lou Landers, empresario y tío de un compañero de clases, está buscando la cura para su enfermedad terminal. Tras un experimento que le sale mal, advierte que puede robar la fuerza vital de las personas al tocarlas, lo que le concede salud a un ritmo de una víctima por día. Por tal razón idea un plan para asesinar a miles y vivir eternamente.

Fue escrita y dirigida por Craig Mazin, acá tenemos como protagonistas a Drake Bell , Sara Paxton, Christopher McDonald y Leslie Nielsen. Para mí las actualizaciones destacadas son las de Bell como Rick Riker, pues le ofrece frescura a la cinta y McDonald como el villano "Reloj de arena", quien le hace la contraparte, aunque le faltó desarrollo a este personaje, se pudo sacar mejor provecho. Por supuesto, sin olvidar a Nielsen como el tío Albert, gran parte de los diálogos cómicos recaen sobre él. Su personaje es una parodia del tío Ben de Peter Parker. Por su parte, la interpretación de Paxton la sentí fuera de foco.

En lo personal considero que esta película está muy lejos de ser una de las mejores del género, de hecho creo que se precipita demasiado y se enfoca en elementos tan absurdos que lejos de atrapar al espectador te preguntas qué haces allí, pero de todos los juicios valorativos que se puedan diseñar, la película está ejecutada para no pensar, incluso para que te olvides de cualquier noción de lógica o verosimilitud.

Son varios los momentos en los cuales se encadenan chistes escatológicos y sexuales sin conexión. Un cameo de Pamela Anderson le añade algo de vida, pero la presencia de Kevin Hart en el elenco echa todo por tierra. Este actor ha permanecido encasillado en un único personaje que llega al punto de resultar desagradable. Admito que solamente seleccioné esta película por Nielsen, pero su presencia, carisma y comicidad no pudo salvar esta cinta por completo.
