WISE STUBBORNNESS: THE POWER OF STANDING YOUR GROUND

Image created with Copilot

I grew up very obedient; I was the most obedient child of my parent growing up, until it looked as if everyone took advantage of that. My elder brother is just a few years older than me, and as such, we grew up almost able to do everything at the same time. Because I was the obedient one, my brother would leave every home chore for me to do while he perambulated the entire community with his friends.

I was never stubborn with my father until a day I felt unappreciated after I had taken most of his clothes, washed and ironed them for him to use for work, even without being told. We had no power supply at the time, so I had to take his clothes to my cousin's house to have them ironed. In the end, my father refused to wear these clothes and chose to repeat the clothes. It was the first time I said no to my father because he wanted me to wash and iron the same set of clothes for him when he had other options which were better than the ones he was using.

My mother was surprised to see me like that and knew that I was very upset, but my dad became angry and at the time, I was already too big to be punished; the last time he had a reason to punish me was when I was still in primary school.

I was glad to have done so because everything changed during that period; they saw me as someone who was capable of being disobedient but had chosen not to, and they respected me more for that.

When I started working with my present company, my colleagues would tell me that the manager does not allow them to go on their annual leave since they had joined the firm and would not compensate them for refusing to let them go on leave. I bluntly told them that my case would be different and will take my full leave, which the company had promised me before I accepted the offer.

I applied for my leave when the time came, but the manager said it was not convenient for the company at the time. I didn't say anything, and I left to apply a second time after a while. He said the same thing this time, and since the year was almost up, I took my case to a higher authority, and not only that, he approved my leave immediately. In the years after that, he did not ask me any follow-up questions or refuse me with his usual phrase of inconvenience. I had broken the circle, and everyone else was allowed to go for their annual leave

Being stubborn has its consequences; that is why you can only be stubborn when you are in the right. My manager had looked for many ways to get back at me then, but I was always too careful with my job, too intelligent for him to put me in trouble, and I also had God to fight for me.

It pays to be stubborn, truly, but it also has its consequences. If you want to be stubborn, you do it wisely, and you make sure you are in the right, and it is worth it. It is sometimes not worth it to be stubborn, so you have to use your stubbornness wisely always. Too much compliance brings resentment, and too much defiance brings conflict.

I love your confidence. It takes someone who knows his right to act the way you did and i love that. Next time, your manager will never deny you for a leave again

  • WOW! I love that word - capable of being disobedience but you choose not to which is a good one. We need this sometimes to show what we have insid

That is such a practical example of how standing your ground can help you get good results, especially when you're doing the right thing and applying a little wisdom.

  • I like your point that being stubborn is only good when you're standing for what's right. Knowing when to say no is an important lesson.
