Hi everyone!
I watched Snatch (2000), and this was one of those movies where I finished it and, thought, I did not understand what I watched.
In a positive way.
After watching it, I get why this movie became a cult classic.
It's chaotic.
It's fast.
It's a violent situation.
It makes me laugh.
There are many characters running around doing their own things, so sometimes you just need to sit back and, watch the chaos.
This review is spoiler free, so I won't be talking about the twists or explaining how the storylines connect.
The Story
One of the first things you notice about Snatch is that it doesn't really have just one simple story.
There are several different characters & storylines happening at the same time.
You have criminals, boxers, gangsters, thieves, promoters, a group of small time crooks and, of course, a very valuable diamond.
And, these people in addition to situations connect with each other.
I'm deliberately keeping the details vague because part of the fun is figuring out who everyone is and, what exactly they're trying to accomplish.
The movie basically throws you into this in modern times of criminals and tells you to keep up.
And, sometimes keeping up is not easy.
There are many names, nicknames, relationships &, little details that I had to pay attention during the first part.
I got used to the style also liked it.

Guy Ritchie's Style
This movie was directed by Guy Ritchie, and his style is probably one of the biggest reasons Snatch stands out.
The editing is fast.
Dialogue is quick.
The camera moves continuously.
Characters are introduced with editing.
There are freeze frames, quick cuts, voiceovers and different visual tricks being used throughout the movie.
It almost feels like the movie itself is moving at the same speed as the characters.
And considering most of these characters are involved in criminal schemes that are going wrong, that actually fits perfectly.
It is not a movie you can casually watch while scrolling through your phone.
Pay attention.
If you look away for a few minutes, there's a good chance you've missed something important.
Once you get into its rhythm, it's fun.

The Boxing Story
Underground boxing is a major part of the movie.
This is where we meet Turkish, played by Jason Statham, and his partner Tommy.
Turkish is involved in boxing promotion, & things do not go exactly according to plan.
I won't explain what happens because that would get into spoiler territory.
But I really enjoyed this side of the story.
Jason Statham is great as Turkish because he has this calm, sarcastic way of reacting to the absolute chaos happening around him.
He has surrounded by people who are constantly making terrible decisions, and, he often feels like the one guy trying to figure out how to survive the situation.
And honestly, I can relate to that.

Brad Pitt Steals The Show
Now we must talk about Brad Pitt.
His character, Mickey O'Neil, is one of the most memorable things about the movie.
His personality differs from Brad Pitt's.
The accent alone is something else.
Mickey is a boxer from the travelling community, and, making sense of what he says can be a challenge.
Sometimes I had to replay a conversation in my mind to catch exactly what he said.
But that's part of the fun.
Brad Pitt understood the assignment.
He is funny and unpredictable and, has a different presence from the other characters.
Every time he appeared, I had no idea what he would do.

The Criminal Side
The other major part of the movie revolves around criminals as well as a stolen diamond.
I will not explain how everything connects.
The criminal side of the story includes people who are greedy dangerous stupid or a mix of all three.
And, that makes it entertaining.
There are people making deals.
People lie to each other.
People attempt to steal from others.
People get themselves into situations they probably should've avoided.
The funny thing is that almost everyone seems to think they're smarter than everyone else.
That is when problems typically begin.

The Dialogue
The dialogue is a significant reason why I enjoyed this movie.
The characters speak quickly.
Fast.
Many conversations contain slang and, British accents.
Some conversations are so ridiculous that I was laughing before I even fully understood what was happening.
The movie uses dark humour.
People say things that could be horrifying in another movie, but here they become funny because of how the scene is presented.
It is not comedy for everyone.
But if you enjoy dark, sarcastic humor, there's a lot to like.
So Many Characters
The number of characters in Snatch can be confusing at first.
There are many.
And many of them have nicknames.
As well as some characters are connected to multiple other characters.
And, then you have different storylines happening at the same time.
So.
Pay attention.
But the cast is part of what makes the movie entertaining.
Everyone feels like they belong to this strange criminal in our current environment.
Even minor characters can be memorable.
Some of them appear briefly and leave an impression.

The Visual Style
Snatch looks good.
It looks like an early 2000s British crime film.
The colours, locations and cinematography fit the story.
The criminal the domain of isn't made to look glamorous.
It feels dirty, chaotic and ridiculous.
The editing is probably the most noticeable visual element.
Guy Ritchie uses slow motion, quick cuts, freeze frames and creative transitions to make scenes feel more energetic.
There are sequences edited to resemble music videos.
It makes the movie stand out with a unique identity.

The Music
The soundtrack also deserves some attention.
The music fits the movie.
There are tracks that make certain scenes feel even more energetic, as well as the soundtrack helps create that cool, slightly chaotic atmosphere.
It's one of those movies where the music feels like part of the personality rather than just something playing in the background.
The combination of music, editing &, dialogue creates Snatch's recognizable style.

It's Actually Very Funny
Despite all the crime & violence, I found myself laughing quite a lot.
The comedy isn't usually based on traditional jokes.
It's more about the situations &, the characters.
Someone taking something seriously when it should not be taken seriously.
A character misunderstands another character.
Someone is making a poor decision.
Or just the absurdity of the entire situation.
Since the movie has criminals who aren't responsible, things can go wrong quickly.
That's where a lot of the humor comes from.

The One Problem I Had
My biggest issue with Snatch was honestly complications.
At times, there is just a LOT happening.
If you're not paying attention, you can easily lose track of who someone is or why they're involved in a particular situation.
I had to piece it together as I went.
But I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing.
Once everything starts connecting, it becomes satisfying.
It's a movie where a second viewing would be better because you notice details you missed the first time.

CONCLUSION
Overall, I really enjoyed Snatch.
It's a movie with its own character.
Editing, crazy characters, British humour, crime story, boxing, dialogue & performances all come together to create something different from a typical crime movie.
Jason Statham is great as Turkish, but for me, Brad Pitt's Mickey was probably the biggest highlight.
I also really liked how the different storylines slowly come together without making everything feel too predictable.
The movie can be confusing at first, but once you understand who is who, it is a lot of fun.
But that is part of the experience.
Snatch is worth watching if you like crime movies, dark comedy, or Guy Ritchie's style.
And if you have already watched it, I can understand why people keep recommending it.
It's messy.
It's chaotic.
It is ridiculous.
But that works.
