Movie Review: Slow Horses

Hi there, my reader who is about to read this movie review. First, I have to say a big sorry to you, and to myself, for not jumping on this series a while back. You would not believe I actually gave this series a shot in 2023, but it was one of those series I felt was moving too slowly for my pace because of how they built up to the action, or at least the part with more suspense and tension. I left the series back then to go ahead and watch White Lotus.

It took a while, and when I say a while, I am talking about 3 years later, when I was scrolling randomly on YouTube looking for an interview to watch. This fateful interview I decided to watch was with Bill Gates, although I do not remember what channel that was on YouTube or what the topic of discussion was, but there is one thing I can clearly remember to date, and that is when Bill Gates was asked what TV show he was watching or one TV show he would recommend to everyone in the world: what would that be? Lo and behold, it was Slow Horses that was his recommendation.

Moving on, you would think that was enough for me to watch the series: a strong recommendation from a billionaire and the richest man in the world, who is hard to excite since he has more than enough money to fill up 5 generations with excitement. I was not even excited enough for the show until I got to see the reviews on X, and I tell you, this series has a lot of fans with good things to say about it. The fans alone had already built up enough hype for season 6. Now the mind-blowing part is that the series is based on a novel from the author's book series. According to Wikipedia:

Slow Horses is based on the 2010 espionage novel Slow Horses by British writer Mick Herron, which is the first book in his Slough House series. Wikipedia

The TV show has even been renewed for seasons 7 and 8 by Apple TV, and it ranks as one of the best TV shows out there for Apple TV. The TV show is so good that it has packed a couple of Emmy awards at the 2026 Emmy Awards, namely:

Outstanding Drama Series 2026 Lead Actor in a Drama Series 2026 Supporting Actor in a Drama Series 2026

This was a big deal for Apple TV, as it was also used as a means to showcase the iPhone 18 and 18 Pro, where the cast were given an iPhone 18 for videos and pictures with their awards. This did not stop there for Apple TV; Slow Horses competes with Ted Lasso on the most-watched Apple TV show.

With all this info, it got to me, and the icing on the cake for me is that the series had a lot of episodes for me to binge. I love bingeing series because, for the time being, I can worry less about what to watch. An outstanding takeaway is that you need to remember this is a spy thriller where the fate of MI5 lies in the hands of their rejects, and they have a boss who believes the best thing they can do is mess things up. You are in for a ride if you watch Slow Horses.

    Never heard of that movie, I’ll have to look it up! By the way, Bill Gates wasn't the richest man alive anymore back in 2023. Musk and Bezos had already taken over a while before that :) But who cares? Bill is crazy rich anyway. BTW, is that chess picture an actual scene from the series? That’d be cool!

    Oh you are in for a treat! I started Slow Horses late too and I regretted waiting. Gary Oldman is just brilliant as Jackson Lamb - completely different from anything else he's done. No spoilers, but stick with it, season 1 gets better and better. Thanks for the review, looking forward to your full take!
