An anime where the main character is ridiculously overpowered, yes this is it and you might think you already know where Mob Psycho 100 is going. Powerful protagonist, crazy enemies, massive fights, explosions everywhere… basically the usual formula but Mob Psycho 100 is just better at telling the story, the plot is basic yet so interesting
Mob Psycho 100 was one of those anime that I just took to watching out of a whim, I basically searched top anime to watch on google and it popped up, and I watched the first episode and then the second and before I knew it I was binge watching the whole show.
The story is about Shigeo Kageyama, better known as Mob, a very quiet middle-school boy who happens to possess an insane level of psychic power. The funny thing is that Mob doesn't really care about how strong his powers are, he actually wants to live a normal life, make friends, improve himself and maybe get noticed by the girl he likes. His psychic abilities are almost a burden rather than something he wants to show off.
Enter Reigen, Reigen is one of the funniest characters, he brings another side to the show, a funny side. He is supposed to be Mob's mentor and a psychic expert, except there is a tiny problem which is that he doesn't actually have psychic powers. He's basically a scammer who somehow keeps finding himself in situations where Mob has to save the day. Yet somehow, despite all his ridiculousness, Reigen becomes one of the most important people in Mob's life.
That's one of the things I really loved about this anime, beneath all the supernatural madness, Mob Psycho 100 is actually about growing up. Mob has incredible powers, but the show constantly reminds us that having power doesn't automatically make someone better than everyone else and to navigate through life you’ll need more than just strength.
BONES absolutely went crazy with this one. The animation has this unusual, almost chaotic style that somehow fits the story perfectly. When the fights start, the show can go from looking relatively simple to completely exploding across the screen with colours, movement and ridiculous psychic battles. But again I have to talk about just how funny the show is. You can be watching Mob dealing with some terrifying supernatural situation one minute and then suddenly you're laughing at something completely stupid the next. The balance between comedy and action is incredibly well done.
Mob himself is written as such a great protagonist because his biggest challenge isn't defeating some ridiculously powerful enemy. It's becoming comfortable with himself. He has all this power, but the series constantly pushes the idea that your abilities aren't what determine your worth as a person. There are also some genuinely memorable characters around him, from Reigen to Ritsu, Teruki, Dimple and the various members of the Body Improvement Club. Lol! Even characters who initially seem like jokes can end up having surprisingly meaningful moments.
The first season is only 12 episodes, so it doesn't feel like you're committing your entire life to watching it. It moves quickly, but with purpose gives you enough action, develops its characters and leaves you wanting more. For a 2016 anime, Mob Psycho 100 has aged ridiculously well. Ten years later, it still feels completely unique.
