The Charro bullfighting festivals held in Villa de Alvarez are heavily criticized for their bullfights, the customary daily horse parades that litter the entire city, and other truly negative aspects. Many people speak out against these celebrations, and the only proposal to resolve the situation is to eliminate them. I don’t think that’s really feasible, though, because it would be like trying to completely eliminate a tradition that’s as old as these cities themselves. I suppose that over the years, these celebrations will undergo some changes; in the meantime, all we can do is enjoy the beautiful aspects of these festivities and contribute as little as possible to the litter and the mistreatment of the city. These photos are from a women’s horseback parade that took place last February. I hope you enjoy them.

These black and white photos capture the beauty and dignity of the riders and the atmosphere of the tradition. I agree that traditions can change over time and while maintaining their cultural value, they can also address the problems they may create. Thank you for sharing an interesting piece of local life with us
