Preparations on My Vegetable Garden 2025 🌱

EN

Hello everyone :)!
After moving to my new place and thanks to the newly gained space it came with, I finally had the opportunity to set up at least a halfway decent garden this year. :)

DE

Hallo allerseits :)!

During the last years I had all my plants in big plastic containers on the terrace, finally having proper soil available again without having to worry whether the volume of the container meets the needs of the plants is a true blessing. The soil of the garden area was not optimal this year and still needs some improvement, but for this year I was okay with it due to time constraints.

A large flower meadow is also planned for the coming year - I already have collected the seeds for this plan during this year. Depending on how spring turns out, it will begin to bloom massively in many places here during next year. :)

But back to the vegetable garden. The original condition of the intended area was not particularly usable and took me many hours of work to be ready for the actual task - the planting. In particular, the many wild blackberries that had spread across the entire area were an absolute horror... up to that point I had also never removed blackberry roots from the ground that were meters long and as thick as an arm, and I am not overdoing it about this point, that was absolutely insane...

Luckily for me, a friend had the appropriate machines at hand, because after working on the ground with pickaxe and spade, most of it was already done with the tillers he got, then it was time to set up the beds. I have to admit, that i did not have the time to pre-grow plants this year, however I received a wonderful address where many true-to-seed plants can be obtained. Nearly 100 tomato plants were purchased, a few zucchinis - yellow as well as green ones, a few eggplants - white as well as black ones, various cucumbers, pumpkin plants and whatever else was on offer and got into my curious eyes. The trunk was definitely quite full and well, we are not talking about a small car. :D

The picture shows about 70% of the plants I purchased. Back home the fun part started - it was time to finally plant and well, just with the sheer amount of tomatoes it took quite some time to get done. At first, everything was also diligently watered, but rather concentrated, thus indirectly more targeted downwards than sideways, so that the roots of the plants would also develop more likely into this direction. This was achieved with the help of the muddy clay soil (after the addition of sufficient water), which was built up into small walls around the plants (see second to last picture).

Since I already suspected that I would have problems with snails or other hungry guests, I got myself a bunch of cheap seedlings at the supermarket to set up a "eat this and leave my good stuff alone - barrier". Which actually worked really well, because everything that came from the little forest on the right first got stuck in all that overbred cheap stuff that I didn’t want to eat anyway. :D

For a short time, a foil tunnel that I had lying around was also set up at the said area, but that was more likely to satisfy my curiosity and after barely a week it was declared unfunctional and fed to the trash can.

In general, a lot of time had to be spent on the rough preparation of the soil. It’s not bad at the moment, but with the addition of horse manure and good compost soil, quite a bit can still be done in terms of improving the quality, but those are tasks for the coming winter or rather a bit ahead of spring next year. :D

After many hours of work, version 1.0 of the vegetable garden was finally completed and only needed to be supplied with water.

Updates regarding the development as well as already harvested crops will follow in further posts. The effort was definitely worth it, especially with the tomatoes I can hardly keep up, and since I have made it my goal to produce as many products as reasonably possible myself, that’s what i will do nearly every evening. :D

Good luck with your upcoming garden, tilling it all up was a good idea. Hope those tomatoes and lettuces do well.

It must be very rewarding to eat a vegetable planted and harvested by your own hands. If I had a square meter of land, I'd do the same. Good luck with your harvest.

  • @tht(73)· 363d

Plants don't thrive in pots. They need a larger, more airy space. It's best to plant them in soil, as you did. They'll receive better sunlight.

The tomatoes are looking good. You'll likely get the best results from them. They'll need staking support when they get a little bigger.

  • @crstypatata(69)· 363d

I like the plants you choose to plant. I hope no insects destroy your garden. Enjoy.

  • @ayane-chan(73)· 363d

Great job. I'm now excited on how it will turn out when you harvest them. Snails are the greatest enemy of gardens, as well as caterpillars. Everytime I'm home, I often visit the veggie garden every morning and afternoon just to check if they're infested.

  • @dreamrona(75)· 363d

Wow! What an amazing starting of garden. You've put so much hard work and it really shows. I like the variety of plants you chose. 🌿

  • @hjrrodriguez(74)· 363d

Great all the work done for the creation of your 1.0 garden friend @schlees although it is just the beginning of it, surely you will have an excellent harvest, also very varied with a good amount of vegetables. I am also fighting to get a place where I can plant a good amount of plants such as chilies, peppers, tomatoes, eggplants, pumpkins, zucchini and perhaps some corn as well as potatoes and onions, in short, also use them in the kitchen to reduce costs.
