This blog is a personal journal of all the movies, Tv-Shows, & Games I consume during a year which enhances my overall experience. The ratings that I give are fully based on my personal preference and enjoyment at the time of watching and I'm writing spoiler-free reviews. The Odyssey (7.7/10)
When it comes down to Christopher Nolan movies, I kind of have a love-hate relationship as he obviously is a great director, but he is also getting overly hyped and praised by the general public while his recent movies haven't fully done it for me. Oppenheimer I kind of found boring and underwhelming, Tenet was too confusing and didn't give me the urge to really watch it again to understand it all. My favorite Nolan Movie by far remains Memento which I watched way back when nobody knew him.
Image SourceWhen it came down to The Odyssey, I almost wanted to skip it out of protest for the extreme woke agenda which has been documented and mocked on the internet extensively before the release. However, upon the first reviews my curiosity was just way higher and I was quite hyped to go see it not knowing too much in advance. All I pretty much knew about the story is that is was a long difficult journey back after winning the Trojan war over the course of 10 years or so with some figures from Greek Mythology.
Image SourceIn typical Nolan Style, there is a lot of juggling with time and it switches from one thing to another which kind of forces you to pay attention for 3 hours which was a bit of a challenge. At some point of the movie, I briefly fell asleep and woke up the moment they were faced with the cyclops and I have no clue how they got there.
Image SourceNolan is known and praised for always using practical effects instead of CGI and in most cases this really shows. However, with the cyclops creature it kind of felt strange to me and a bit of a miss. Everything else though looked really good.
Image SourceWhen it comes down to the story, it afterward surely got me intrigued and inspired to read more about it but overall there also were some parts that I can't say I liked that much. The part with the bow which kind of felt it didn't make much sense, near the ending also where he was fighting everyone at the same time kind of felt unrealistic. So I'm a bit mixed.
When it came down to casting, Nolan always gets the big stars but for me, there often are miscasts. Many actors who are known for other key roles always kind of distract me away from the movie as I go: "Oh Here we have Spiderman", 'The skinny Transgender", "The Guy From Twilight", "Zendaya", ...
That said, I like Matt Damon and thinks that along with some of the others, he played a great role and it never bothered me (unlike the others) that he played different roles in his career.
Image SourceConclusion Well, the Oddesey story intrigued me for sure and most of the film I enjoyed watching even though I shortly fell asleep a couple of times. At the same time, I think the paise and ratings that this one and Nolan blindly are given are exagerrated. So similar to Oppenheimer which I believe I gave 7.4/10, this one also didn't really blow me away but I still give it a quite solid 7.7/10
