Hello, beer lovers! 🍻

How are you? Summer is still going strong here, and there’s no rain in sight for at least another week or so. The only thing I’ve noticed is that the crops in the field are ripening more slowly, even though I water them regularly. But that’s about it. Nothing earth-shattering is happening, which is just fine with me. And now that it’s evening, I’m enjoying a beer. After all, it’s #beersaturday—I’ve lost count of which one in a row 🍺

I have two cans in front of me, one Croatian and one German; I’ll happily empty them and share the beer experience with you!

First, the one with less alcohol.

Desetka - 10

Brewed by Pivovara Daruvar, Daruvar, Croatia. Can, 0.5 l, alcohol 4.9% ABV, IBU 18. Lager.

What do the Master Brewers say?

A lager with a lighter, refreshing taste and lower density, which makes it exceptionally suitable for everyday drinking and the intense summer heat. Brewed according to original Czech recipes and methods.

The beer is a clear yellow; the head is average and dissipates quickly. It has no distinct aroma. It goes down smoothly, and I detect a slight bitterness in my mouth, though even that fades quickly. Watery.

The beer is drinkable! Of course it’s drinkable and affordably priced at around €1, but it’s watered down and has almost no flavor. A typical industrial beer, a supermarket lager—I couldn’t drink it every day. Maybe it really is brewed according to an original Czech recipe, but I think they added quite a bit more water.

I’ve tried quite a few beers from this brewery—their “5th Element” craft beer series is excellent—but this one really isn’t up to par.

Erdinger Brauhaus Helles

Brewed by Erdinger Weissbräu, Erding, Bayern, Germany. Can, 0.5 l, alcohol 5.1% ABV, IBU 14. Lager, Helles style.

What do the Master Brewers say?

Erdinger Brauhaus Helles has everything a true Bavarian lager needs: it’s smooth and deliciously refreshing. On first sip, gently spicy malted barley notes combine with a pleasant hop bitterness to form a well-rounded body. Thanks to its harmonious character, this pale lager from Erding goes down very easily – demonstrating the best qualities of Bavaria’s great brewing tradition.

That said, the Erdinger Brewery is better known for its wheat beers.

The beer is a light golden color, with an average head that dissipates quickly. It has a malty aroma. It goes down smoothly; on the palate, I taste the malt's sweetness and the slightly spicy, mellow bitterness of the hops, which lingers in the aftertaste.

A very drinkable and refreshing beer! It comes across as very fresh and balanced, with no extremes—exactly what a Helles should be: a slightly unassuming classic, brewed according to the ancient Bavarian Purity Law, with extended cold maturation. Here, it’s available at Spar and Tuš stores; the price varies from €1.50 during sales to €2.00.
