Abortion

"What is it?" He asks, his voice muffled through the phone. "A baby. Your baby." Angela couldn't believe Daniel. After all the long phone calls, the cute dates and passionate nights. The fruit of their escapades have come and now he denies it. She took a look at the instrument in her hand again, the two parallel lines and her being 3 weeks off her period was enough proof for her to know. That and she just felt different, it was clear to her that her body wasn't entirely hers. "Abort it." The voice at the other end of the phone gave his commands quickly and harshly. "What did you just say to me?" Angela asked, and didn't want to believe what her ears heard. "I said you should remove the baby." Daniel reiterated. "I am not going to have some quack poke around in my belly." Angela responded, appalled that he'd want to put her in harm's way so easily. "They aren't quacks; they've done this numerous times before. I'll send his number, so please—" "NO! Daniel I will not kill a child, nor risk getting killed trying to kill a child!" With that Angela cut the call, cursing at her situation and at Daniel's crassness. She felt even more stupid when he wanted to send an "abortion specialists" number, for him to have their numbers saved, it begs the question of just how many girls he has gotten impregnated with before.

As the thought crossed her head she hissed and cursed again. If someone was recording only the audio of her day from this morning, one might think she's a snake from the amount of times she has hissed. She looked at her stomach; flat and cute, leading into nice wide hips that give her the slim-thick figure she's well known for. She imagined the belly fat with the load of a 9 month old fetus and shuddered. It was early March now so the summer body plans were down the drain.

Her phone buzzed with a text and it was from Daniel. A phone number with just two words after

"Call him."

Angela looked at the message and hissed again the idea of killing a child goes against everything she believed in, yet it increasingly looked to be the only solution. She sat down in thought; her finances, social life, academic life, everything would suffer. Then Daniel would leave. His stance about babies has been clear since Day 1; so they have been careful. Yet as she realized she hadn't bled at her routine time and after the double lines this morning, it was clear they weren't careful enough.

She remembered in the past when she and Daniel spoke about the concept of abortion and it became a huge argument, now when faced with the reality of it she realized just how her points back then were filled with naivete. He spoke about the costs and the time required. "A baby isn't a new purse or clothes Angela. It's not something you can hug and then keep somewhere at your own convenience, I'm not ready for it and neither are you." His words hurt here. She went online, searched for essential baby supplies, and began writing down their prices. With her calculator beside her, she slowly realized just how absurd the numbers were. Feeding alone was her full salary of the month.

Now she could totally understand the position of some of the girls she used to hate for going through with it. She couldn't possibly train a child. The feeding, education, health costs and other necessities, and she couldn't count on Daniel who wouldn't go through with it too. She called his line. "Daniel, do you really think I should go through with this?" She asked, a lot calmer now. "It's your body, your choice. Just know that if you do choose to keep it, it's your right to make and you're free to do it. Then I'm free to abandon it, for that's my right to make too." Daniel replied with his voice steady. Angela jerked by the cruel logic. Her heart ached at how emotionless his voice sounded. She couldn't believe that this was the man she had once called her love, the man she had thought she could rely on. She wiped the tear that streamed down her face and replied. "I see, thank you." Her conviction had hardened, her mind made up and her values about to change. She looked at the number Daniel sent, one of the specialists in killing children, with shaky fingers she dialed the number and waited for someone to pick. They did and after a few moments of silence Angela spoke. "Hello, please I'd like to schedule an abortion.”

That is a hard subject. No matter where you fall on the issue, some people are going to be upset. What you do is lay it out. This is a tragedy, one faced by women across the world and across time.

There are no easy answers, and you are clear in describing that. A tragedy. What is the moral choice and what it the practical choice.

No easy answer on that one.

Hmmm i always tell people that it is easy to hold on to our principles when we are not the ones facing the consequences but reality can be very overwhelming.
