If you haven't had someone try to downplay your intelligence and abilities, then you are probably living under a rock.

There will always be people in your circle of friends who think they are smarter than everyone else, and if it seems someone other than them is doing something impressively well, they will always look for bad comments to make to belittle that person and what they seem to achieve.
These insecure folks might smile hard at your jokes and pretend to be happy with what you have achieved, but behind that facade of happiness lies a seething amount of envy or jealousy you can never fathom.
If given the opportunity, they will try to blacklist you in your circle.
They will always look for ways to voice their disapproval indirectly, and it will most certainly always be done behind your back. If the spotlight is on you for a moment, it triggers them so much that you start to see how much insecurity they have been carrying, hidden by a lot of smiles and laughter. They'd rather what you have accomplished was done by them; you might see them start their own, a little closer to yours, just to compete. In their defense, the sky is big enough for everyone. Of course, it is, but if you look closely, it is mostly because you seem to have been getting all the attention, and that did not sit well with them. When you see such people, the most effective thing you can do is stay far away from them.
You don't need to be associated with them out of pity or because of your circle.
Make it abundantly clear that you do not want to have anything to do with them. It is better to be hated for keeping a distance than to be destroyed because you tried to accommodate an envious person.
An envious person will go to the ends of the world to destroy you. You can never begin to fathom how far they can go to harm you. If all the smiles and attention you are getting is not getting to them, they'd rather you disappear from the face of the earth than deal with their insecurities. So, distance will save you more than trying to be nice to them, hoping that it will change their attitude towards you.
It won't.
It will only fuel them, and once you grant that access, they start to dig up valuable information around your attention and weakness, and when the time is right, they will cripple you. There is nothing to gain from being close friends with someone you can see is envious of you.
Run for your life.
And if it is not possible to run, make it abundantly clear that you do not want to lie in bed with them.
Let those around you know so they do not entertain them on your behalf.
If they want to entertain this person, they should do so on their own turf.
When it comes to anything concerning you, they should know it is off limits.
