This morning I had to go to the center of my city (Pistoia, Italy) to buy some tools I needed for my work on art and walking along the alleys I thought I've never told you about something you can see along the walls here in my area: the aediculae (in italian we call this kind of things "edicole votive", but we also use the word "tabernacolo" for them).
You can find similar ones also in the villages out of the city, usually on the side of a street and there they are similar to small buildings, while along the alleys of the city they are niches on the walls of old buildings. They framing a statue or a painting about a catholic theme, the most part of the time about Saint Mary.
Just to know, the word "aedicula" came from the Latin "aedes" that was a temple building. Some of the niches in my city are very ancient, because here it was a long time tradition to build one of them while people was building a new house or palace (and someone uses to do the same now) and even if the most part of them came to us in a good condition, some other ones needed to have new statues or new paintings inside. The following one is one of my favorites, because after the original ancient paintings was totally lost along the centuries, the owner of the building decided to ask to the local painter Giuseppe Gavazzi to paint a motherhood, a Madonna and Child in his own naive style:
Giuseppe Gavazzi was a known artist here in my city and his paintings and sculptures are in a naive style. He worked many time on the theme of matherhood and even if this one is not in excellent condition, it reminds me sweetness and calm. ❤️
I also took some pics to other aediculae that we can see walking close to my home. In the following one you can see an ancient niche with a recent statue of Saint Mary inside of it. As you can see, people use to place there some flowers as a devotional act.
The following one is high up on the wall and so I think it's not simple to take care of it or to place there some flowers. It looks like abandoned.
Well, now I have to come back to my brushes and colors.
