When I turned 36, I felt far too old to do things that young people do, and far too young to do things that older people do. My thirties were a wonderful time in my life because I felt healthy and confident; I made the right decisions without giving them too much thought. There were no more relationship issues because, without a boyfriend, there are no issues 🤣😅.

On my birthday, I woke up for the first time where I’d always wanted to be: at my favourite spot, the beach. I’d been wanting to spend it by the sea for ages and a friend helped me make it happen; she and I met at university and our friendship had already lasted over 10 years by then. At that time, another friend of hers ran a guesthouse in Choroní – one of the best beaches in the Caribbean – and she let us stay there, so the two of us went to the beach, along with her eldest daughter.

I had a brilliant time; the village of Choroní has a lighthouse shaped like a ship – it’s beautiful – and visiting it was quite an experience. We spent the whole day at the beach and I revelled in the views and the sound of the waves. We returned in the afternoon; her husband came to pick us up at the town’s bus station, and they decided to take me home. When we arrived, we found my whole family there, including my grandmother and my Aunt Martina, who lived in another house – everyone had gathered to celebrate my 36th birthday.

Cuando cumplí 36 años me sentía muy vieja para hacer cosas de chicos y muy joven para hacer cosas de viejos. La década de los 30 fue una etapa en mi vida maravillosa porque me sentí saludable y segura, tomaba decisiones acertadas sin pensarlo mucho. Ya no existían conflictos de pareja porque sin novio no hay conflictos 🤣😅.

El día de mi cumpleaños amanecí por primera vez dónde siempre había querido, en mi lugar favorito la playa. Tenía el deseo de pasarlo en mar desde hacía tiempo y una amiga me ayudo a cumplirlo, ella y yo nos conocimos en la universidad y nuestra amistad ya pasaba de los 10 años para ese entonces. En esa época otra amiga de ella tenía una posada en Choroní una de las mejores playas de Caribe y la puso a su disposición, así que ambas nos fuimos al mar, junto a su hija mayor.

La pasé divino, el pueblo de Choroni tiene un faro en forma de barco es hermoso y conocerlo fue toda una experiencia, pasamos el día entero en el mar y me deleité de las vistas y el sonido de las olas, nos regresamos en la tarde, su esposo nos fue a buscar al terminal de la ciudad y ellos decidieron traerme a casa cuando llegamos encontramos a toda mi familia incluyendo a mi abuela y mi tía Martina que vivían en otra casa, todos estaban allí reunidos para celebrar mis 36 años.

This was another surprise party organised by my mum; she got everyone together, had the cake made and waited for me to arrive. Apparently, my friends didn’t know a thing, but it was very convenient that they dropped me off at home so they could sing ‘Happy Birthday’ and eat cake.

I’ve noticed, ever since I started organising my own birthday celebrations, that almost all my cakes are the same colour – pink, blue or purple – it seems to be a constant. My mum made jellies, which is another dessert that goes with the cake.

Esta fue otra fiesta sorpresa organizada por mi mamá, reunió a todos mandó hacer el pastel y esperó que llegará, según mis amigos no sabían nada, pero fue muy oportuno que me dejaran en casa para que pudieran cantar cumpleaños y comer pastel.

He podido observar desde que estoy haciendo la iniciativa de cumpleaños, que casi todos mis pasteles son del mismo color, rosado, azul o morado parece una constante, mi mamá hizo gelatinas que es otro postre con el que se acompaña el pastel.

My granny has been wearing the same dress at my last few birthdays 🥹. My 36-year-old self would never have imagined that, in the future, I’d be the one looking after all the members of my family, especially my granny – it’s my job to wake her up in the mornings and put her to bed at night. It’s a responsibility I didn’t consciously ask for, but I’m sure my soul needed to take it on.

Returning to my birthday itself, I came home feeling revitalised by that trip to the beach, marvelling at seeing beautiful new things and feeling a sense of well-being, happy to be surrounded by my family and, on this occasion, by my friend Ana and her husband – though she’s since had another 🤭. that birthday was really lovely and enjoyable; my dad’s the one missing from the photos, but he was the photographer. Mi abuelita tiene puesto el mismo vestido en mis últimos cumpleaños 🥹. Mi yo de 36 años jamás hubiese imaginado que le tocaría en el futuro cuidar a todos los miembros de su familia, en especial a mi abuela que me toca despertarla en las mañanas y acostarla en las noches, una responsabilidad que no pedí conscientemente, pero de seguro mi alma si necesitaba hacerlo.

Volviendo al día de mi cumpleaños, yo regresé a casa renovada por ese paseo a la playa, maravillada de ver cosas nuevas hermosas y llena de bienestar, feliz de estar rodeaba de mi familia y en esta ocasión de mi amiga Ana y su esposo para esa fecha, pues ya tiene otro 🤭, ese cumpleaños fue muy placentero y bonito, mi papá es el que falta en las fotos, pero el fue el fotógrafo, con esto me despido gracias por acompañarme en estas memorias de cumpleaños y te invito a que te unas a participar recordando las celebraciones de tus cumpleaños.
