Ever since we’ve been living at my grandmother’s house, we’ve been using her cooker; it’s a good brand and has worked well: both the hob and the oven are still in working order, and what I like most about this old cooker is its electric ignition system, which turns on automatically at the touch of a button if there’s electricity; otherwise, you have to light it manually. However, over the years it has stopped cooking quickly; even though you could see a big flame on the hob and the heat was on, food could take hours to cook. It’s strange, to be honest, but that’s how it was; for example, the banana slices would ‘enchumbaban’ — this expression means that, when frying the bananas, they’d soak up oil and never be ready. No matter how much we cleaned it or tried to unblock it, it didn’t get any better.

Desde que vivimos en casa de mi abuela hemos usado su cocina, la de ella es de buena marca y ha salido bien aún funciona tanto las hornillas como el horno y lo que más me gusta de esta cocina vieja es su sistema de encendido eléctrico que con un botón se prende automáticamente si hay electricidad, de lo contrarío con encendedor manual. Sin embargo, con el paso de los años ya no cocina rápido, aunque se vea la llama grande de las hornillas y el fuego activo un alimento podía pasar horas sin cocinarse, es extraño la verdad, pero así sucedía, por ejemplo las tajadas de plátano se enchumbaban esta expresión significa que para freír los plátanos se llenaban de aceite y nunca estaban listos. Por más que se limpió y se buscó destapar no se mejoró.
Even the simplest tasks, like bringing water to the boil, took ages, and breakfast ended up merging with lunch and dinner because of the cooking time. We complained so much about the cooker that my brother decided to give my mum a new one as a present, buying it on an instalment plan – yes, in cash 😅 And the new one, which is grey, arrived at home as a surprise; when they delivered it, everything happened so quickly that they installed it in a rush and I didn’t have time to take any photos of it.
Cooking in the new one is quick – or takes just the time each dish needs – so we’ve got one less problem, solved in the most convenient way: a new appliance. Thank goodness, this is a blessing because, sadly, buying anything new in Venezuela is very difficult, but there’s always light at the end of the tunnel.

Lo más sencillo como poner a hervir un agua duraba muchísimo, y se unían los desayunos con el almuerzo y la cena por su tiempo de cocción, de tanto quejarnos de la cocina mi hermano decidió regalarle a mi mamá una nueva sacándola por un sistema de pago por cuotas, si cashea 😅 y la nueva que es de color gris llegó a casa por sorpresa, cuando la llevo fue tan rápido todo que la instaló de prisa y no me dio tiempo de fotografiar.
En la nueva se cocina rápido o el tiempo que necesita cada alimento, así que tenemos un problema menos con la solución más cómoda, un nuevo electrodoméstico, gracias a Dios, esto es una bendición porque adquirir cualquier cosa nueva en Venezuela es muy difícil lamentablemente, pero siempre hay luz al final del túnel.
