Let’s Reveal the Visions of Verico Mystery Cards!
You’ve known them as Mystery Cards. Now it’s time to meet the characters behind the mystery.
Through Visions of Verico, six winning cards gave members of our community the opportunity to help bring something of their own into the Splinterlands. What followed was a collaboration full of personality: ideas shared, artwork developed, details refined, and stories given a place in Praetoria.
The question marks are coming off! Today’s update will reveal all six characters on your Mystery Cards. Enjoy their new artwork in-game, and visit the Lore tab for each character to discover their story!
And this is quite a group.
There’s a dwarf carrying a grudge that survived an empire. A silent worker whose reflection keeps moving when he stops. A wandering prophet who hasn’t quite persuaded the ocean to cooperate.
Alongside them are a gardener following a troubling thread of ancient magic, a custodian turning burned soil into new beginnings, and an old protector who will happily put you to work—once he finishes arguing with a vegetable.
Six characters. Six stories. A little more of our community brought to life in the Splinterlands.
It has been a pleasure working with everyone involved, and we hope you enjoy discovering the personalities, artwork, and lore we’ve shaped together.
Let’s reveal the Mystery Cards!
Mystery Card 1: Grimbold “Gnome-Bane” Ironfist
Dwarf • Fire / Earth
Created in collaboration with Jeffopenscards
Some grudges outlast empires.
Grimbold’s comes with a warhammer.
Born in the mountain halls of Grimbardun, Grimbold lost kin and clan holdings after gnomish collaborators helped lead Chaos forces into the Ironfist tunnels. He survived the collapse carrying his father’s hammer. Forgiveness did not make it out with him.
He fought in the rebellion, but liberation never settled his personal score. Today, he roams Praetoria clearing tunnels, slaying monsters, and defending dwarven claims with an enthusiasm that makes anyone wearing a pointed hat deeply uncomfortable.
His armor, trophies, and battered tools tell you exactly how he earned the name “Gnome-Bane.” Beneath that fury is a survivor who remembers the people buried beneath his mountain—and refuses to let their loss be forgotten.
A useful ally. A terrible enemy. Probably not the dwarf you invite to a gnome engineering exhibition.
Mystery Card 2: Drowned Soulwarden
Undead • Water / Death
Created in collaboration with Lorkus
Keep an eye on the reflection.
The first of Lorkus’s two characters brings a quiet, unsettling presence to the flooded lands of Praetoria.
Clad in water-dark robes, the Drowned Soulwarden tends a Shadow Siphon with slow, deliberate care. Pale motes rise from flooded earth into sealed vessels. Water beads on his sleeves beneath a cloudless sky.
In his lore, other undead manifestations work faster in his presence, the plot requires less dark energy, and the worksite’s rations stretch farther under his watch.
He seems like someone you could trust to quietly get the job done.
Then you notice the water.
Sometimes his reflection takes another shape. Sometimes his pole uncovers volatile glint beneath the silt. And when something stranger settles against the intake, he carefully lifts it free with both hands.
Beneath the still surface, his reflection continues working.
Mystery Card 3: Vel
Elf • Earth / Life
Created in collaboration with Lilyfire, courtesy of Vugtis
His garden is flourishing. His findings are troubling.
With Lilyfire, courtesy of Vugtis, we worked on a character whose quiet care for the land leads him toward a much larger mystery.
Drawn to Praetoria by a current of living magic, Vel coaxes life from wilted vines and barren branches. Flowers bloom beneath his care, and seeds answer his quiet encouragement.
To a passerby, he might look like a gentle gardener with soil on his fingers.
But every garden he tends also helps him listen. Roots trace hidden currents, and blossoms mark patterns in a map only he can read.
The ley lines beneath Praetoria are changing. The stars seem to agree with what he is finding. Something vast, ancient, and waking lies at the end of the pattern.
Vel would much rather heal a grove than fight a battle. For now, he watches, studies, and tends the land.
One day, Praetoria may ask more of him.
Mystery Card 4: The “Estimated Prophet”
Tideborn • Life / Water
Created in collaboration with Thor9
The prophecy is magnificent. The timing needs work.
Thor9’s character brings music, kindness, and a wonderfully optimistic relationship with the future.
This wandering Tideborn travels the coast with a driftwood staff, a shell lyre, and absolute confidence that something extraordinary is just around the corner.
His visions promise parted waters, thunder, and a shining doorway beneath a wheel of golden fire. He has carved the signs into his staff and stitched them into his clothing so everyone will recognize the moment when it arrives.
The sea has yet to cooperate.
The wagoners named him the Estimated Prophet, and he accepted graciously. Each morning, he raises his staff before the surf. Each evening, he returns to the campfires and plays.
Between predictions, he cleanses brackish water, soothes injured sailors, and remembers the songs travelers request, the names of their children, and who has been missing since the last storm.
He may still be waiting for his great miracle, but there is always room for him beside the fire.
And probably a request for one more song.
Mystery Card 5: Fenmoor Ashwarden
Khayali Djinn • Death / Fire
Created in collaboration with Lorkus
A sword reforged. A rose untouched. A field renewed.
For Lorkus’s second character, the central idea was death transformed into renewal.
Fenmoor Ashwarden brings a solemn kind of care to the land. With deep-violet skin, completely black eyes, and smoke-dark hair, this khayali gathers blighted growth into smokeless pyres. Then, with an ash rake forged from a ceremonial sword, it works the cooled ash back into the furrows.
An antique rose rests above its heart, fresh and living beside the ember-light. As it works, it murmurs an old observance:
Memory endures long; voices in night survive when old rites die.
Its lore holds quieter mysteries, too: a fallen rose petal that becomes another manifestation’s guise, glint uncovered beneath the ash, and something the fire refuses to consume.
Fenmoor’s story gives Death and Fire a quietly compassionate purpose: tending what remains so life can begin again.
Mystery Card 6: Lonetree Protector
Drakoshan • Earth / Dragon
Created in collaboration with Lonetree
If you stay, you’re helping.
Lonetree’s contribution is an old protector with a planting staff, carefully sorted seeds, and very little interest in making speeches.
Lonetree Protector talks to trees. He would appreciate it if everyone else stopped interrupting their answers.
After wildfire devastated his home valley, he tended the one surviving oak through winter. Its bark was scorched and its branches bare, but its roots were alive. He hauled water, cared for its wounds, and kept assuring it that spring was worth the trouble.
When it finally produced acorns, he planted every one.
A thriving woodland now stands around the tree whose likeness he wears on his bronze breastplate. Today, he travels between struggling farms and neglected groves, offering practical help and plenty of unsolicited advice.
Some of that advice is directed at vegetables.
He will shelter a sapling from hail or teach a woodcutter which trees can safely be harvested, but careless hands soon discover that his patience has limits.
Come looking for a famous protector and you may find him arguing with a plant. Stay long enough, and you’ll be handed a spade.
More of Praetoria, Built Together
These characters began with people in our community imagining who else might belong in this world.
Now they have faces, names, histories, and habits. Some carry old wounds. Some tend the land. One has a very ambitious plan for the ocean.
A huge thank-you to Jeffopenscards, Lorkus, Lilyfire, Vugtis, Thor9, and Lonetree for helping make these six characters possible. It has been a pleasure working together and bringing these ideas to life.
This is part of what makes Splinterlands so special. Little by little, we get to build around and with the community—and see that collaboration become part of the world we all share.
We’re loving this direction. This is fun, and we hope that comes through in the cards and their lore.
