Introduction to the Structure of Matter To understand the structure of matter, we must ask ourselves the following question: What are things made of? To answer this question, chemistry comes to our aid, because chemistry is the science that studies the structure, properties, and transformations of the matter around us.
Matter
Democritus, around 400 BC, argued that matter was made up of very small bodies separated by empty space. So, he already had a rather important insight.
But what is matter?
We can say that matter includes everything that has mass and occupies space.
For example, a piece of iron, water, or air. Then, if we imagine observing it on an increasingly smaller scale, we arrive at the fundamental particles with which we chemically describe matter: atoms, molecules, and ions.
Roughly speaking, we can say that matter is composed of atoms, molecules, and ions.
To be more precise, we say that
Matter is made up of particles, which in chemistry we mainly describe as:
Atoms → the fundamental units of chemical elements, for example, Fe, C, He.
Molecules → sets of two or more chemically bonded atoms, for example...

Ions → atoms or groups of atoms that possess an electrical charge, for example...

So let's say that technically matter is made up of particles, which can be atoms, molecules, or ions.
Clarifications about matter
Matter has levels.
Atoms, molecules, and ions are not three mandatory consecutive levels. A substance can be composed directly of atoms (like a noble gas), molecules (like water), or ions organized in a lattice (like sodium chloride).
The image below illustrates this concept.

Conclusions Matter represents everything that has mass and occupies space and is the fundamental object of study in chemistry. Its structure can be described through atoms, molecules, and ions, which allow us to understand the composition of different substances.
Historical Notes and Questions The concept that had the greatest influence for many centuries was the Aristotelian one, that is, that of Aristotle (c. 350 BC). According to this view, all matter arose from the combination of four fundamental elements: air, earth, fire, and water. Did you know that a decisive step forward in our understanding of matter occurred with Robert Boyle in 1661, when he began to advocate a particle-based conception of matter and began to challenge previous traditional interpretations?
