Introduction to Heat Capacity Heat capacity is one of the fundamental physical quantities in thermodynamics. It helps us understand how the temperature of an object changes when it gains or loses energy in the form of heat. Technical Definition In strictly technical terms, heat capacity is defined as follows: The heat capacity of an object represents the amount of thermal energy required to raise its temperature by one Kelvin (1 K).

The Formula for Heat Capacity Assuming a constant heat capacity over the range in question, the formula is as follows:

Where: C = heat capacity of the object, expressed in J/K. Q = amount of heat exchanged, expressed in joules (J). ΔT = change in temperature, expressed in Kelvin (K).

Physical Interpretation How can we define heat capacity within the context of physics? We can state that the greater the heat capacity of an object, the larger the amount of energy required to change its temperature. Exercise

Let us imagine having 1 kg of water, initially at 20 °C, which is heated to 30 °C. To achieve this temperature increase, we must supply approximately 41,860 J of heat. Therefore, our data is as follows: Q = 41,860 J Ti = 20 °C Tf = 30 °C

The first step is to calculate the temperature difference: ΔT = 30 - 20 = 10 K

Now, let us calculate the heat capacity: C = Q / ΔT

C = 41,860 / 10 = 4,186 J/K

Result This means that 4,186 J are required to raise the temperature of this kilogram of water by 1 °C.

Conclusions Heat capacity is significant in the design of heating systems, cooling systems, heat exchangers, and industrial processes. It measures the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of an object by one degree. For a given mass, a material with a higher specific heat capacity requires more energy to achieve the same temperature increase.

Historical Background and Questions The concept of heat capacity developed primarily between the 18th and 19th centuries, when scientists began to study heat and its effects on matter in a quantitative way. Did you know that one of the first people to distinguish between heat and temperature was the Scottish physicist Joseph Black (1728–1799)?

C = 41.860/10 = 4.186 J/K
