First freeze of the year

Blue sky

This morning it was 28F. Thats the first hard freeze of the year. Well I'm counting it. It was definitely a good frost.

Front lawn

We have a short growing season of about 150 days. From mid-May to early October. Our hardiness zone is 4b-5a. I usually err on the side of colder variety plants.

Lawn to birches

Plus we have trees on every side of our property so that limits the sunlight some even in summer.

Field

We have adapted our routine some to lengthen the growing season. We start seeds early. Sometimes as early as February. We have a furnace room that stays warm we use to germinate the seeds.

Field north

Then we have heating pads and grow lights to grow the seedlings. Of course, you can always buy starter plants from the lawn and garden stores but what fun is that 🙂 Also we started using a cold frame for moving plants outside this last season.

Sunrise

We are about done this year with only brussel sprouts left outside right now. There are a few other plants that can tolerate Octobers in Vermont but we don't have any this year.

Fire on the Mountain

The mountain looked good at the lake this morning. So I guess life goes on 🙂

Yes, the season is short in our latitudes... You would need to have a greenhouse to lengthen it a little. Beautiful photos with the colors of the sky and the trees. Have a great Tuesday

The lakeside mountain view is beautiful in full color. You got a good frost! We have had mild ones so far; it has only dropped to 38 °. I'm in zone 6b, so it usually comes at the end of October.
