First tell me, who in the seven worlds end a season like that. First, it was "One Piece"; now, it is "Avatar." Common you producers and directors, I live in a capitalist society, and I do not have all the time in this world. Just when, I was so hooked, they just ended it. With the best "suspense" approach.
Storyline
So basically, the world is divided into four nations: Water, Earth, Fire and Air. Some people can "bend" their nation's element, but only the Avatar can master all four. And Avatar is the only one to maintain a good balance between the nations.
But the Fire Nation begins a devastating war, the Avatar mysteriously disappears for 100 years. Then Aang, a 12-year-old Air Bender, is discovered in an iceberg by siblings Katara and Sokka.
Now with the Season 1
I mean a little preview is important to understand the context. Don't you guys think?
So season 1 follows Aang - our protagonist - the Avatar, Katara and Sokka as they travel toward the Northern Water Tribe. Purpse is to learn Waterbending technique. Meanwhile, Zuko - the antagonist - relentlessly pursues them, hoping that capturing the Avatar will finally earn him his father's approval.
Finally to the Season 2
Season 2 starts up after the Avatar gang leaves the Water Tribe. Aang has learnt Waterbending. Now, Earth and Fire left, as he is an Airbender himself.
The seasons revolves around the transformation of characters. And for me, Zuko plays a bigger role than our protagonist. So Aang, along with his friends, go in search for an Earthbending teacher. And this is where they meet, Toph - the blind bandit. And this blind girl teaches Aang Earhtbending.
Here is a joke from the season. I have actually seen it in the anime version, so the real one made me laugh again.
"It's dark. I can't see." - Sokka
"Oh no! What nightmare!" - Toph (remember she is blind)
Anyways back to the story. Zuko and Iroh are now fugitives from the Fire Nation. I will be talking more about it ahead.
The bigger story, however, revolves around Ba Sing Se, the enormous capital of the Earth Kingdom. Aang and his friends discover that the city is not quite the safe haven they expected. There is this usual politics thig.
And then there is Azula, Zuko's sister, who is sent to capture both the Avatar and her disgraced brother.
LAast episode is full of surprises and spoilers, so I am not going to discuss the ending. Lol!
Personal Take
Now this is my favorite part. Because I do not have to follow the norms; all I have to do is to write the flow.
Starting with my favorite - Zuko the antagonist. Quite surprising thing to happen, right? Because usually, it is the hero we all love. Actually, Zuko is going through identity crisis, and his uncle is there to help him be a good man. It is the depth of his character and transformation. Which I think Aang lacked. Like Zuko and his uncle both are transforming emotionally, and that is way better than learning super hero powers.
To simply put: it takes a lot of courage to deconstruct ideas. First you have to let go the constructed ideas, then understand the new one, and finally construct it. Imagine seeing power as only thing important since childhood, and still choosing to be a good person. Ending may change everything, but at least, this guy tried. So both the chaarcters have done henious crimes against humanity, but still they are trying to be good. The question of justice and forgiveness is your's to decide.
The tree is growing
There is a beautiful tree which I noticed while watching. And, I am taking that tree to state an example. So what does a tree needs to grow? Land (Earth), Water and Air! Perfect! These three are the elements of Nations. But then there is - Fire. And what does fire do? It burns; it annihilates. So Fire Nation is just following their natural instinct.
Yoooohooooo! I am becoming a philosopher. Though self-proclaimed, but who cares :)
Then there is this quote: "I had to feel everything so that I could feel nothing, which is the key to feeling everything." - Bumi, Season 2 Episode 1
I started watching Season 2 like a week back, and I still cannot figure out, what Bumi actually means here. After a long time, I am stuck at a point where it itches me to not have an answer. I wonder, if it is even deep or not.
Maybe Bumi is trying to say that Aang has to follow his own pathway. Maybe he is saying to stop looking for short-cuts, or just stop running away. Oh the probabilities! I will leave this quote here for now.
And this is it for the review x analysis x yapping. Rest of the things are just basic stuff. I would not say that it is the finest series out there. But, it still deserves a must watch.
The best thing about it is - PACING! There are no big dull moments, the plot really follows everything smoothly. Moreover, if you are into powers and fiction, you will surely be loving it.
