Hello to everyone in this community and to all fellow craft enthusiasts! I was recently asked to create several felt items—mostly pins, along with a couple of pieces to be used as keychains. I felt a bit unsure, as I hadn’t really worked with felt before, and this was my first commission using this particular material. Even so, I decided to take it on, and once I got started, I ended up being absolutely delighted with the result.
Back in my country, felt used to be considered a cheap material, and anything made from it was hardly valued at all. But now, I can tell you it’s definitely no longer inexpensive—haha! Anyway, even though finding felt in the city wasn’t easy at all, I managed to get by using what I bought along with the felt I already had among my craft supplies.
When working with felt, I usually create the "drawing" either by using the felt itself or—as is the case with my keychain designs—by forming the image using the thread. To make the beetle keychain, I first created a sketch on a piece of paper and then began stitching directly over it.
Since I don’t know much about different types of stitches, I focused on filling in the areas and, above all, outlining the design. Once the shape was defined, I removed the paper and simply used the same thread to fill in all the empty spaces. It was a rather slow and laborious process, haha, but I must admit the result is truly beautiful. It’s even inspired me to create more embroidery in this style—this time, to offer as patches for clothing.
I didn’t take photos of the process for all the pins because I was so focused on making them that I completely forgot—haha! However, the process is similar to the one I showed in my post about the Frank Frankly pin; essentially, it involves cutting out the pieces to form the figure and then assembling everything using thread and silicone glue.
I love it when, after taking the plunge and trying out a new material, I end up feeling inspired to use it in future projects. Since this commission, I’ve made other felt pins, and I’ve already sketched out some new designs. Not to mention, it’s a fantastic activity for times when I don’t have my sewing machine with me—especially in places where the electricity supply isn’t exactly the best! Haha 💚
✨ Thank you so much for visiting my post. I hope you found it interesting ✨
💚 Until next time! 💚
