When I first heard about this movie... the whole idea sounded a little strange to me... A future where almost the entire human population has lost the ability to see, and people have lived without sight for generations? I was thinking, how are they even going to make a whole series around this? But after a few episodes, I was hooked...
SEE is ploted around hundreds of years in the future after a virus wiped out most of humanity and left the survivors blind... Sight has basically become a myth, and people who are believed to have the ability to see are considered dangerous... The story follows Baba Voss, played by Jason Momoa, a powerful warrior trying to protect his family after twins are born with the ability to see and honestly, the world they created is probably one of the most beautiful things about the series...
Imagine growing up in a world where you've never seen the sun, a tree, a mountain or even your own face. That's a crazy concept and the show actually tries to think about how people would survive in that kind of world... They use ropes to navigate, sound to communicate, smell to identify people, and all kinds of clever methods to move around and fight.. It made the world feel different from the usual post-apocalyptic shows...
Baba Voss is basically the kind of character you'd expect Jason Momoa to play because He's huge, intimidating and extremely good at beating people up but what I liked about Baba wasn't just the fighting.. He's a father first.. Almost everything he does is about protecting his family, and you can really feel how much those children mean to him..
There are moments where he looks absolutely terrifying, and then five minutes later he's just a worried father trying to keep his family alive... That contrast worked really well for me...
Some of the fights are brutal, but what makes them interesting is that the characters aren't relying on sight... They're listening for footsteps, feeling vibrations, using sound and basically trying to figure out where their enemies are... and yes, there is a lot of violence... A LOT...
The show can get extremely bloody and sometimes it feels like nobody is allowed to have a good day for more than five minutes...
Another character I really enjoyed was Queen Kane, played by Sylvia Hoeks... She's one of those villains where you keep asking yourself, "Why are you doing this?"... She's complicated, unpredictable and sometimes completely terrifying...
Although There were definitely moments where I was watching and thinking, "Okay... how did we get here?" ... But eventually I stopped worrying about every little detail and just enjoyed the journey...
What really surprised me was how much the show improved as it went along... The first season has some rough edges, but the series becomes more confident with its world and characters... The second season was better, and the show eventually ended with its third season and I actually liked that it had a proper ending.
Visually, SEE is very beautiful... The forests, mountains, rivers and villages make this strange future feel surprisingly real... There are moments where I honestly forgot I was watching a TV series because some of the locations looked incredible but underneath all the action, I think the biggest thing SEE is really about is family...
Some parts are unnecessarily dramatic... Some storylines could have been handled better, and there are definitely moments where you have to suspend your disbelief but I can't deny that the concept is fascinating...
