The Last Kiss is one of those movies that takes something normal and romantic and turns it into a complete nightmare... A first kiss is supposed to be sweet, memorable and maybe a little awkward. Honestly, just imagine finally kissing someone you like, only to receive a full preview of their death. At that point, romance is no longer romance. It is basically a warning system.
The story follows Laurel, a young woman whose first romantic encounter leaves her with a disturbing supernatural ability.. Whenever she kisses someone, she sees their future death and so What begins as something confusing quickly becomes horrifying when she realises that people close to her may be in danger... The situation becomes even worse when a killer begins targeting people around her.. Laurel has to figure out what the visions mean, who is responsible and whether she can actually prevent the deaths she sees.
The central idea is easily the strongest part of the movie because It takes the fear and uncertainty of young love and turns it into a supernatural mystery.. Instead of wondering whether someone likes you, Laurel has to wonder whether kissing them has just placed a countdown on their life and that is a pretty stressful dating experience.
The movie also does a decent job of building mystery. Laurel does not immediately understand her ability, and the audience discovers the rules alongside her. This creates some tension because every new kiss becomes dangerous. You are constantly wondering what she will see next and whether the vision can be changed.
The horror elements are entertaining too... The movie has a few disturbing death visions, chase sequences and moments where the danger feels close but It is not the most extreme horror movie I've ever watched.. it knows how to create suspense from a simple idea... I also liked that Laurel is not presented as a perfect final girl from the beginning. She is confused, frightened and emotionally overwhelmed. Her struggle is not just about surviving the killer. She is also trying to understand what is happening to her and whether she should continue getting close to people.
That emotional side gives the story more substance than a standard “young people are being hunted” horror film.
However, the movie has some obvious weaknesses... The supporting characters are not always developed enough, so some of the deaths do not carry as much emotional weight as they should. A few characters feel like they exist mainly to become victims or provide information. The story also follows some familiar slasher patterns, which makes parts of the mystery predictable.
