Spotlight on Burn

In the Sunday Funday post today, I asked what people feel they would need to lose or add to be their ideal weight, with most talking about losing. I am the same and while I am not sure what my ideal weight would be considering I have a fait bit of muscle also, I could safely lose 10-12 kilos and be in a pretty good range. When I came to Finland I was 65kg and I have put on more muscle since then, so I suspect 75 would be better.

Make that lose 15-17 kilos.

As some might know, I don't sleep that much and that definitely has an weight loss, because it affects hormones by both making us feel hungrier and reducing the signals to say when we are full. And then there are more cravings for crappy food and (while most don't think of it), a reduced ability to say no to the cravings. There are other factors too like stress hormones and blood sugar regulation, metabolism in general, and the ability to burn fat and keep muscle. But I think the biggest factor for me is;

I eat more.

Pretty groundbreaking.

But because I am up for several hours after everyone else has gone to bed, even after a large dinner I get hungry again and will essentially eat another meal. If I were asleep instead, that would be a meal's worth of calories I wouldn't be eating and at that time of night, they tend not to be good calories. If I could just go to bed earlier, I would be able to skip the added meal, plus have a longer "fast" before the breaking of it in the morning. Five hours isn't really a fast, but if I could be in bed two hours earlier, I would be able to skip the worst of the hunger hours.

Tonight I made poke bowls for the family, this time with proper sushi rice and it was healthy and delicious. The girls made chocolate muffins, which were pretty good and unhealthy - but only small. However, it is now around 2230 and normally I would be up for another four hours, and I am already getting peckish. If I could train myself to go to sleep (and not wake up a few hours later) it would be fantastic, but I have struggled with going to bed early all my life. I think I picked it up when young because I didn't want to miss out on anything. I would stay up until I just couldn't stay awake. And with no one ensuring I went to bed at all, that just became the habit.

For the last almost decade it has meant I have been able to write a fair bit, since most of what I write has been in the evenings, but since I am not working that much at the moment, I might be able to break the routine of writing so late. The trouble there is, I tend to be more creative in the evenings, which is also when I tend to be more active. I go to the gym quite late also, if I can.

While sleeping earlier might help me with my fat burn goals, it would also help me in other factors also, such as my relationship with my wife. We rarely go to bed at the same time, which is stupid. Though, I can't go to bed as early as her and actually sleep. And while I don't have much experience with early mornings on a good night's sleep, maybe I would be more alert and struggle less to get moving. I don't think I will ever be a "morning person", but I could be less of a night person.

Since this week I will be leaving to a client location very early, I am going to try to make it the week of early nights also. Perhaps it will help me kickstart a streak so that I can make them familiar and feel natural to the point it is habitual. And I think that if I am able to maintain it, cutting out an extra meal of empty calories a day would probably give a boost to my fat loss results too.

I wish it was possible to have a piece of tech or an app that would give the ability to set all kinds of habits and feelings, like reducing the craving or enjoyment of sugar, or going to bed early, or making exercise attractive. That way, we could try out different habits and see how they feel and experience the results, without having to do all the work of actually creating a new habit. Unfortunately, that app doesn't exist yet, so I need to do the work.

Half a kilo a week would have me in a bikini body by next summer.

But how would I feel?

I think according to the experts my ideal weight for my height is something like 165 pounds, but I have feeling I would look like a corpse at that weight. I'd be happy getting down to 225 or something like that. I think that would be a good balance. At my age though, that is a tough call. I thought sure when I got my CPAP machine it was going to boost my metabolism and help me lose weight, but that doesn't seem to be the case at all.

  • Our favorite neighbour often says that her husband(who is about 90 years old) eats nearly all the time. He finishes eating breakfast, brings plate to the kitchen and immediately asks for more.

I was gonna say if you're definitely a night owl can you not just wake up later? But I get woken up at least parttially by JJ at get stuffed o'clock when that morning lark arises and sometimes can't get back to sleep x_x

I don't go to bed at the same time as him either, he's in bed and up way earlier than I am. I guess the good thing about that is that we both have some solid built in "alone time" hours because we run on different rhythms.

Good luck on your quest to become a lark! Hopefully you don't have the incessant backslides I still have x_x

And I don't know how much you would like/approve of the technology that would be required to make that app possible XD

Sleeping late has it advantages and disadvantage, one way I know that helps with sleeping earlier is removing the mind from everything and focusing on sleep. There was a time when I slept for about 3 to 4 at night, it happened for a long time, then I increase it to 5 hours I think that will do, though people told me its not enough but I sometimes sleep at noon to cover up.

Yeah this is a big topic in our house atm...

Ive just been on a big health change around the last year. Since covid (chips wine and chocolate after shift work nursing) i put on about 25kg. got up to nearly 80. yikes...

but ive lost 22kg. this year. feel amazing. still a couple to go... but i have slowed down as i need to ensure i keep the muscle. so important. Both my husband and i are big gym people.

My husband is similar to you, stays up late, doesn't sleep well and gets the night time munchies! lol

he eats well. loads of protein and veg, but night time blows the calories. He has managed a little bit off in the last 4 months. but he is struggling.

Its so hard when you are up... writing/working and you are hungry..

As for me. I used Monjaro. BEST thing ever. Despite the cost. Im sure at some point they will tell us its bad... however... my blood sugars. HR. weight. all my bloods everything is all coming back into alignment. You can't tell me that having normal blood sugars again isn't worth any potential risks.

    Ive accepted the trade.

Now just into making sure im putting on muscle as i drop the last few KG. I suspect. i will have to focus on the muscle on... then do a weight off.. again.

    we will see

  • I think our brain mostly functions creatively when the stress is not much. To some people it’s in the morning why some it’s in the night when there is no one to distract them from doing their stuff. It’s good to say that creativity is relative. I write when there is something that arouse my interest if not the motivation to write might already be repelled.

  • Try swapping foods with fruits in the evenings... You have to be weary of sugar though...or something like cucumber and see if it satiates the hunger

  • That late-night eating is so real. Sometimes I'm not even hungry. Though I have learn to stop eating anything again after dinner. It's already a month plus,I hope to be consistent with it.

I go to be around 10 PM and wake up between 6 AM and 8 AM every morning. Yesterday I went to be late at 11 PM and woke up at 8 AM. I also follow intermittent fasting that is I try to stop eating at 8 PM and not eat till noon next day, though lately I have been breaking that habit and having an extra cheat meal of 2 to 3 fried eggs with a fresh tomato in the morning.

My biggest vice is sugar. I was able to go almost 2 weeks with practically zero sweets, but now I am back to half of my regular sugar intake and after 4 weeks of that nothing changed so far in terms of my body composition or weight... Still around that same stubborn 12% body fat percentage...
