WTF: Hermit Kingdom Come

We Talk Friday

(WTF)

This is a semi-regular series that I will run on Fridays to hold discussions on a current topic from the week gone. The aim is to keep them light and conversational, though some might be heavier - regardless of the content topic itself though, just have some fun engaging and discussing with whoever happens to put in the effort in the comments section below.

We Talk Friday Ep. 77: Hermit Kingdom Come

1. NKOTB

(North Korea on the Block)

Apparently, the 6.3B hack of Binance yesterday was performed by an elite North Korean hacking unit for what is the largest crypto hack in history. Well, that is if you don't count the Mt. Gox hack which was 450M at the time but is worth about 65 billion today.

Binance has promised to cover the loss themselves from their reserves, which is good news in some way, but this is going to happen more and more. Security is never going to be secure enough from now on.

But, all of this is good news for the starving and repressed North Korean people, as Kim Jong Un has promised to spend the ill-gotten gains on advancing NK missile technology.

2. Pervert Mansion

Crystal Hefner who was married to the late Hugh Hefner for six years before he died, has been "naming and shaming" the men who visited the Playboy Mansion as sexist and misogynistic. And she would like to help dismantle the patriarchy.

Ummm... it is the Playboy Mansion.

She accused Hugh Hefner of rape and incest as well as sexual abuse, as well as lots of other disgusting things, yet stayed married to him until he died, participating willingly in these things. Are these women brainwashed to be there, is it human trafficking, or are they there by choice?

All I can say is the very wealthy and the celebrities all seem to be fucked up.

3. Lady Goog Goog

Both Google and Intel have taken a bit of hit to their share price in the last few days, with Intel getting rekt on the back of news that the PC market will caused reduced earnings. The reason for Google's loss was the impact AI has had on its ad revenue, which is by far its largest revenue stream. I guess there is some good with using AI.

But compared to the hack of Binance of 6B, the Google stock fall valuation is around 500B in value. Some one lost a bit, someone gained a lot on some shorts.

The sad reality of all of this is, none of this money matters, because none of it is put in the hands of people who are going to use it to make a positive difference. It is all just buy and sell to make numbers go up and down, while the world falls apart.

Hold on.

My say on Topic #2: I have noticed that many stories about celebrities reveal how complicated human relationships can be. Things are rarely as simple as they first appear in the media.

It is all just buy and sell to make numbers go up

Companies like Google are part of a bunch of indexes and ETFs a lot of retirement funds hold it...

  • I think such a hack is a stark reminder that cybercrime can have consequences far beyond the financial losses, particularly when stolen funds are used to support oppressive regimes.

Self custody and cold storage used to be seen as an inconvenience for active traders, but events like this make keeping large sums on central exchanges look like an extreme risk.

The Binance hack part is scary, 6.3 billion is not small at all. I also worry about normal users, they pay the price even when exchanges cover it.

I remember your previous post about looking upstream and questioning the roots of our problems I think this post connects to that same idea. We often focus on economic growth, technological achievements, and the movement of enormous amounts of money, but rarely stop to ask what all this progress is actually doing for humanity Perhaps the problem isn't a lack of innovation or wealth, but the direction in which we are moving. We keep building more powerful systems without necessarily making the world a better place to live. Real progress should be measured not only by what we create, but also by what we improve and what we manage to protect along the way.

Staying married to him until the end while fully participating in that lifestyle, only to pivot to naming and shaming after inheriting the legacy, feels deeply hypocritical

Watching all that hacked crypto go up in smoke as his next big missile launch blows up. untitled.gif

I’ve also read some posts and seen discussions on various Discord channels about accounts on HIVE being hacked. Attacks have been a frequent occurrence this week. I hope this doesn’t lead to a drop in prices. As for the abuse and exploitation of certain women associated with Playboy—and I don’t mean to play devil’s advocate—this certainly won’t be the first or the last time a woman comes forward with such allegations. The thing is, despite all this, many young women still dream of being part of that world of luxury and excess. They may well be victims of the situation, but there is no doubt that they also bear some degree of responsibility for the lives they lead. Best regards.

The world can change so quickly, especially with technology, money, and power. What concerns me most is that behind every big financial gain or loss, there apeople and lives affected by the decisions of those in power. Sometimes, we need to pause and remind ourselves that wealth and success mean little if they do not contribute something good to humanity. Sad reality.
