My Very First Rebuild On The 8HP Transmission. (Aced It)

Well Hello There Fellow Technicians And Hivers!

The Concerning Rebuild.

Somewhat yeah, even though I wasn't the one that thought of this insanely crazy brilliant idea and yet somehow the weight of it had to land on my shoulders!

Okay fine we will carry it, let's see what we need and can do here!

A little back story might be needed here, so the client bought a second hand import transmission and dropped it off, now since it is an import it might have been fitted in a different build and model but it still remained the same transmission, but the casings didn't quite match up. The import's casing was a little bit longer, not a lot like 2 centimeters. That 2 cm's proved to make all the difference, the cross member mounts didn't match up underneath and this build required a build over into the original casing.

I have to admit I like these challenges.

More Bumps To Be Expected.

I have treaded down a similar road multiple times before, therefor I have some knowledge to double check absolutely everything. This rarely is a case of strip out and drop it into the original casing. A lot of measuring taking place.

Take the output shaft for instance, It's quite a bit longer, this must have been in a longer vehicle since the casings are also stretched out.

The Uncertain Parts.

So this is where it gets a bit more fishy, this is what I don't like.

This entire drum is connected to the output shaft, so warped drums is a serious issue, although it is common it is not that common. I have to use the old output shaft which was absolutely demolished. Luckily for me I can change out the pistons and the seals and pray on the best possible outcome.

Everything else matches, the sizes of the drums and all that, counting gear ratios is still very important and matching up the clutch plates thickness, the whole basket of things!

So for that reason we will be re-using the import piston and seals then build that into the original output shaft drum.

Preparation

I won't be lying if I say the hardest work of everything here is to get everything cleaned!

It has this residue building over everything that just doesn't washes off, I mean it's better than cleaning out a manual transmission but still a lot more corners to cover here with all these drums.

I have to admit I had some puzzling with the first and most important drum, in my defence this was my first tear down on this transmission the 8HP, and also my first build of one. sort of a build.

I had everything sorted out until I moved around a few things and a thrust washer dropped from one of the drums and boy finding the right spot for it was a mission!

Got it nice and sorted though!

The build is starting to take shape now!

I am putting in more effort than usual, I really don'T want to be rebuilding this thing again! It is a fun experience but it is more fun than just jumping to the next project!

Such A Small Thing For Such A Big Vehicle!

I still can't fathom this and trust this is the case with most transmission it's not such a ZF thing or such.

They appear huge but when you actually remove the casings it is not that big at all. Keep in mind the big round metal sphere chilling to the left is also mostly casings.

Dropping Everything Into The Casings!

This is the fairly easy part ey and almost complete, after this it is only the pump housing and the valve body and valve body cover.

Then this one is ready to go home!!

The pump housing.

Right where she needs to be!

Lastly The Heart!

I sincerely hope for the clients sake that this heart is indeed well and beating strong! These are usually very sensitive, I did tear it down and give it a thorough cleaning but with these things it's always a gamble!

Now it's clean fresh oil and smooth tar ahead!

Take note this is not a how to guide, merely myself talking about the work I do and my thoughts around certain things.
