There’s this app on my iPhone called Freeform, and I have been seriously struggling to use it for designs that look like they came straight out of a Canva template. I’ve tried, I really have.
I’ve used it to create a few designs that I attached to some of my previous posts, but whenever I go back to look at them, something just feels off. They’re not giving me what I had in my head and efore anyone asks, “Why not just use Canva?”, I can’t.
I don’t want to subscribe to Canva Premium, and the free version leaves a watermark on some of the things I want to create, which I absolutely do not approve of. So, the actual reason I’m writing this is that if you use an iPhone and you’ve mastered the Freeform app, please come and teach me. I genuinely want a tutorial. Short, long, ridiculously detailed, I don’t care. Trust me, I learn quickly.
There are these little dots that appear on the board whenever I open the app, and I desperately want to understand what they’re for and what I can actually create with them. I’ve experimented with them, but somehow I just end up dragging things around endlessly without understanding what I’m doing.
At this point, I’m beginning to think Freeform is basically CorelDRAW for the iPhone, and if that is remotely true, I desperately want to explore it properly. I see simple pieces of art on Pinterest all the time and think, I could probably make this if I just knew which tools to use. Now that’s the frustrating part.
I love art. I love beautiful designs. Whenever I come across something particularly well-designed, I stop to stare at it. Sometimes I even find myself wondering how someone managed to take a few simple elements like shapes and turn them into something that beautiful. I want to be able to do that too.
Speaking of design, I have another slightly controversial opinion. I really don’t like a lot of the AI-generated designs I see these days. Maybe it’s just me, but the ones I have come across feel tacky.
So many brands are now using AI to create banners, graphics and even logos, and while some of them may be technically impressive, they lack that little something that makes a human-designed piece feel intentional. It doesn’t quite give.
I don’t know how the rest of the world feels about it, but personally, I wish people would use AI for whatever else they want to use it for and leave design to the artistic humans who know how to create beautiful things that actually move the mind. Because a genuinely good design doesn’t just advertise something. The design itself becomes the advert.
