An Indian boy wants to follow the steps of his father and become a doctor.
He finishes medical school top of the class, and makes the decision to leave India and immigrate to Canada to practice medicine there.
His mother follows and supports him wholeheartedly, although she is reluctant at first.
Things in Canada don’t go as expected, and he ends up working as a cabbie.
Not all Indians are taxi drivers
Can a doctor of medicine also work as a taxi driver?
According to the title of the movie, yes, even if he has finished medical school with honors and is now considered a qualified doctor.
It’s not uncommon for students to do various jobs while studying at university, in order to pay living expenses, but the real problems start after they finish university, when they can’t find a job and work in their fields of expertise.
Due to the big number of Indians working as taxi drivers, it has become a stereotype to think of every Indian as a taxi driver, or restaurant owner, at best.
Those few who have managed to become physicians, for example, struggle to make others accept them as such.
They involuntarily stick out like a sore thumb in a negative way, and they will have to fight hard for years to gain professional and social recognition and acknowledgment.
During the early years of their careers, very few people will trust and believe in them, but this is ordinary with young professionals in their first steps in any field.
For all this to change, something truly dramatic needs to happen, and in this movie, the highlight of the plot that turns everything around is the birth of a baby in a cab.
