Jonathan Jacob Meijer, a sperm donor from the Netherlands, became an international sensation due to the fact that he has provided sperm to numerous women across the globe.
The documentary series The Man with 1000 Kids is about various families that are shocked after learning the scale of Meijer’s donations and has made the story even more interesting.
Meijer reportedly gave sperm both through sperm banks and directly to mothers. Some mothers suggested that they made the choice based on various reasons, such as appearance, education and other personal traits of the donor.
The question of how many children have been conceived using the particular donor’s sperm remains unanswered. According to several sources, including the documentary, the number is close to 1000 children. However, Meijer does not agree with those data and says that the real figure is far less than that. Some sources suggest that the number is between 500 to 600 children.
It is difficult to give the exact number of children conceived because some donations were done informally in different countries.
There are concerns among people that one donor can have a very large number of children. They worry that sisters and brothers can accidentally meet or have a relationship in the future.
Some parents do not know how many people have actually used the services of Meijer.
Moreover, in 2023, Dutch court decided that Meijer should stop donating sperm.
The case has resulted in broader discussions about donor limits, genetic testing, record-keeping, and the regulation of sperm donation. It also demonstrates the challenges of tracking donations when private arrangements come into play.
