[TV] Brothers

Okay, so let's talk about Brothers today ,because see ehn, this is one of those shows where the whole character of the show seems a bit too crazy to be real, but it's still very real.

The premise here is that two men who have literally been best friends for decades, Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, are fictionalized and exaggerated images of themselves in this comedy. The twist that was the whole show wasn't just pulled out of thin air, it's based on a true rumour that's been harboured by both of them for years , that they could be half brothers. There is a report that Harrelson's dad had an affair with McConaughey's mom around the time Matthew was born and, without ever having to do a DNA test to put the matter to bed, these two have just embraced the mystery and made it a big show, That's a high commitment to a bit, I really respect.

Then when Woody's daughter's wedding breaks up, he packs up the entire family and drives right out to Matthew's ranch in Austin, where he hopes to offer everyone a peaceful and therapeutic break, of course, however, peace and quiet was never going to last because Ma Mac, Matthew's mum, accidentally spills this long forgotten secret, that sets the whole question of "are we actually brothers" on fire again, once you've revealed the secret, you can't unwrap it.

From there, Woody essentially turns the whole ranch upside down in an attempt to find out what has happened, and I can tell that a lot of the comedy and chaos comes from a grown man trying to bust into his best friend's property like he is trying to crack a cold case, on another front, however, Matthew is faced with something that feels just as strange but just as intense, a bid for the governorship of Texas ...... which, quite honestly, feels like its own show altogether, the two narratives are swirling together, one pursuing a longstanding family secret and the other a political career, and it feels like precisely the sort of tangle of layered humor that could come off the pages of ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail' if written any better.

The real thing that's just as interesting to me with all this is that it makes the distinction between reality and fiction difficult, these are not actors pretending to be characters, but two actual best friends, who have been engaged in the public rumor and make it all the basis of a scripted show., it is a very daring creative move as every joke about their possible blood relation is delivered with a different impact due to the truth mixed in with the fiction.

I also believe that underneath the comedy, it is a story that is ripe for an emotional core because both men are facing the realization that their friendship may actually be more than friendship, more than friendship after 20 years, it's a biological connection, and neither of them were ready for that, that' is not gold for the people who like to poke fun at the things they don't like, it's gold for the writer's who get the sentiment right, and not just for the fun.

A show that's actually created on chemistry and real history and people, I haven't watched the whole thing yet, but just off the concept, that's one of those shows that's actually made on chemistry and real history and people, that's already ahead of a lot of scripted comedies that is going to make up some of their chemistry and history, i want to know more about it, so I am going to finish it.
