I saw Drawn Together today, and it makes me say this, this movie had me sitting up straight the whole time, it is really Interesting, it is this sort of film that gradually draws you in and then andd in the middle of it all, you realise you've been holding your breath for twenty minutes without realising it.
Marfil Cortés, daughter of a well-connected businessman, leads an apparently untouchable life in New York. Great apartment, dazzling nightlife, all of this with no problems included. One afternoon, while it's nice and sunny in the middle of Central Park, she's kidnapped, and ust like that, no warning, nothing, Then, days later, she reappears just as mysteriously as she had vanished, except that she now has no recollection of anything that had actually happened to her, no explanation, no suspects, just that this heavy unsettling feeling that she will no longer be safe, even standing in her own life.
After that, of course, her father does not take any risks, he hires a bodyguard to keep watch over her at all times, Sebastián Moore. And this is where the movie really begins to work for me , Sebastián is not a warm and reassuring bodyguard, He is cold, controlled, says just enough to be necessary, that guy who is so controlled his discipline seems like it could be a bad thing, he immediately causes Marfil to resent him, to resent the rules, to resent the fact that there's somebody following her around, but you all know how this sort of thing works, that resentment doesn't last long, Tension starts to build, slowly, without either of them realising, something neither of them expected, much more complex than a professional arrangement should be.
Now this is where it got interesting, as I wouldn't have guessed this at all. Sebastián isn't who he says he is, Turns out that he is an undercover FBI agent with his partner, and they did the kidnapping of Marfil in the first place, Everything was a ploy to get her father to cooperate with the FBI, but it seems her father is no ordinary businessman, he's connected with something darker, one of the rival mobsters who has a serious problem brewing up. I should say I had my jaw dropping on the floor when I watched this, because it's not something I would have imagined,Throughout the entire duration of this bodyguard-charge scenario, you have no idea that the entire thing was fabricated from the get-go.
The threat that haunts Marfil doesn't go away and she gets kidnapped again, while she's trying her best to get away, fragments of her original memory return, then when the action is really hot, really sweet, when you are in real need of a resolution, the movie just... halts.... To be continued.... I was like, "wait, that's it?" It ends exactly at the moment when it is falling apart most, and I have to still be here and wait for the second part, like everybody else.
But, I don't want to be mad about that cliff hanger, honestly, see the performances, the tension, the entire slow burn between Marfil and Sebastián, it all worked, It's fascinating enough, that I can't wait for the next part to be released when they choose to. Some stories have a way of making you want more and more just like this one did.
