I think learning a language is one of those things that looks easy until you actually sit down and start learning it, You may think you can just learn a few words, practise for some days and start speaking fluently, but there is so much more to it than that.
If I had to learn English from scratch, especially reading and writing, I think it would take some time, even though I communicate in English, learning the rules, understanding grammar, spelling words correctly and knowing how to construct proper sentences are different things, sometimes, even people who have been speaking a language for years still make mistakes when writing it, so, I don't think mastering any language is something that happens overnight.
One thing I have always wanted to do is learn other languages, I have actually been trying to learn Spanish, Japanese and Korean. Yes, three different languages, I know that sounds like I have given myself a lot of work, but I have always found these languages interesting....
Spanish sounds beautiful to me, and I like the way people speak it, Japanese is another language I have been curious about.... especially because of the culture and the way the written characters are different from what I am used to, then there is Korean...... i enjoy watching Korean dramas, and sometimes I find myself wishing I could understand everything they are saying without having to depend on subtitles.
I have tried picking up words, learning their meanings and understanding how to pronounce them, sometimes, I get excited when I remember a new word or recognise something I have heard before, It gives me this little feeling of achievement, like I am finally making progress.
But then, life happens.....
Between school, responsibilities and trying to sort out other things in my life, I haven't really been able to give these languages the attention they need, Learning a language requires consistency, you cannot practise today, disappear for three weeks and expect to remember everything when you return, you need to keep reading, listening, speaking and practising, even when you don't feel like it.
And that is where my problem has been, it is not that I have lost interest; I just haven't been able to focus on it the way I would love to.
If I had enough time, I would probably start with Spanish and gradually work my way through the others, I know trying to learn three languages at once can be confusing, so taking them one after another might be a better idea.
I also believe learning a language is not just about speaking it. Being able to read and write it is equally important, you need patience to understand the grammar, pronunciation, sentence structure and all those little things that make the language unique.
For now, I haven't given up on my language learning goals, i may have to put them aside sometimes because of other responsibilities, but I still hope to return to them properly...
Who knows? maybe one day i will be watching a Korean drama, listening to Spanish music or reading something in Japanese without needing Google Translate or subtitles.
That would be a lovely achievement for me.
