[Movie] Review of The Breakfast Club (1985) [Eng/Esp]

Hey, hey, movie lovers!

Lately, all the movies I’ve been watching are from the ’80s and ’90s; I think it’s because I love the wild atmosphere of that era, especially in movies starring young actors. The latest one I just watched—and which I absolutely loved—was The Breakfast Club.

IMDb

The Breakfast Club uses the dramatic device of confining five students who’ve been grounded to a single room for hours. Each of these teens is very different from the others, with each representing a social stereotype of youth: the princess, the jock, the nerd, the weirdo, and the delinquent.

This forced coexistence for nearly an entire day leads them to argue, fight, and eventually talk and share their innermost thoughts with one another, bringing them to a deeper understanding of each other’s dynamics and personalities—shaped by their environment and the adults who play villainous roles in their lives.

There’s the wild and rowdy John, the popular and wealthy Claire, the athletic and disciplined Andrew, the neurotic and socially isolated Allison, and, finally, the brainy and model son Brian. And even though each of them displays an almost aggressive desire to have nothing in common, as the hours pass, boredom and John’s inevitable outburst—his picking on the rich girl—trigger what turned out to be the most carefree and liberating Saturday of their lives.

This film, directed by John Hughes, shows how society, institutions, and authority figures can tame and shape individuals—especially young people—by influencing their behavior patterns for better or for worse. In this case, the film focuses on the most destructive aspects, exploring the reasons behind the erratic, antisocial, cruel, and perfectionist behaviors of the young people who will make up tomorrow’s society.

IMDb

Through the lens of five teenagers in a library, the film explores the environment in which we live and the parents and adults who create it, control us, and affect us psychologically. It comes as no surprise that “the criminal” is abused at home, that “the princess” is used as a tool by her parents to hurt one another, “the odd one out” faces mental health issues due to her parents’ indifference, the “athlete’s” father exploits him and projects his own issues onto him, and the “nerd” lives in a constant obsession with perfection due to his parents’ excessive demands.

The vice principal, Mr. Vernon, who is in charge of overseeing the punishment, asks them just one question as a warm-up exercise: “Who are you?” This ends up triggering a reflective journey for the teenagers, who don’t want to end up like their parents and who, at the same time, wonder if they’ll be able to transcend their environment and stereotypes so that when they return to class on Monday, they’ll be friends.

Their parents are the antagonists in their lives, and each of them deals with this in a different way. Although at first they were repelled by one another, as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that—even though each is the antithesis of the other—they are also, at the same time, what the other most wants to be. The “weirdo” wants to be popular, the athlete wants to be ignored, the nerd wants to be the athlete, and so on…

There’s also a brief moment between Vernon and the janitor Carl, where Vernon reveals the sense of betrayal he feels toward young people and his fear that they will be the ones to take care of him in the future, prompting Carl to confront him with an uncomfortable truth. Although I felt this part came across as a bit forced.

Of the group, John is ultimately the center of it all—the one who sets the interaction in motion. He comes across as wild and, at times, unpleasant; he feels repulsed by the others because he believes their lives are better than his own. He can’t help but criticize them, yet at the same time, he longs for their lives. His freedom, his wildness, and his defiance of authority initially lead the others to reject him, but deep down they want to be like him, eventually seeing beyond the label the world has placed on him. It’s worth noting that they ended up causing a ruckus in the library, hahaha—they danced, jumped around, and even hid from Vernon because they had a certain illegal substance on them.

Finally, they entered the library as separate individuals, only to emerge as a single unit. They write their essay on a single sheet of paper and, in a nutshell, reject the teacher’s question because he simply “sees them the way he wants to see them.” They don’t have to explain themselves because Vernon will never see beyond the stereotypes society has imposed on him, but they already see themselves as more than that.
