Perfume: The Story of a Murderer(2006) is a psychological thriller, a dark and visually captivating thriller, the movie explores the consequences of obsession, the dangerous consequences of being obsessed and a strong desire for perfection, the dark power of human senses. A movie directed by Tom Tykwer and the storyline is based on a novel by Patrick Süskind. The movie tells the story of Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, Baptiste is a gifted man, but really troubled and desperate, his extraordinary sense of smell led him down a horrifying path of becoming a murderer.
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer(2006) begins in the eighteenth century when Baptiste Grenouille was born in a filthy fish market and was abandoned by his own mother. From the beginning, he was portrayed as an extraordinary child who possessed unusual ability and power, what was really exceptional about him was his ability to identify and remember any type of scent, but this gift wasn't all he needed because he lacked human emotions, even affection and the morality of a human. His obsession with perfumes got really bad when he decided to create one that would capture the essene of human beauty and make people adore/ praise him.
The main character, Ben Whishaw as Jean-Baptiste Grenouille in this movie, portrayed his character perfectly, he portrayed intelligence, a character who is emotionally detached and frighteningly consumed by his deadly obsession.Jean-Baptiste Grenouille shows a character who understands humanity through scent, his expressions, movements, and silence communicate shows it all. Grenouille isn't like the regular villain that's driven by vengeance or greed, but one driven by obsession and perfection , his desire to create something that he was convinced will make his existence meaningful.
The cinematography of this movie is one of the greatest strengths of this movie, from the grim streets, to the beautiful landscapes of the eighteenth-century, that helps in creating an atmosphere that makes the viewers understand Grenouille's world. The filmmaker and the director did a good job, the movie possesses composed images, expressive performances, and atmospheric music, everything about this movie makes the viewers curious about the smell that fascinates the protagonist, Baptiste.
At the beginning of this movie, I never saw Grenouille as a murderer , seeing him transform from a gentle and innocent looking young man to a ruthless murderer is the most disturbing aspect of the story. Seeing him turn his victims into ingredients to achieve an extraordinary fragrance shows the length people can go to achieve their selfish desires , the movie dives deeply into power and beauty.
The supporting cast in this movie really performed well in this movie; there were characters like Dustin Hoffman as the perfumer Giuseppe Baldini, who really performed well, and Alan Rickman as Antoine Richis, who adds depth to the narrative too. Rickman's brought in emotional weight to this movie as a disturbed father who tries to protect his daughter, his concerns for his daughter was a very important part of this story.
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer(2006), also has its weaknesses, the beginning stages of the movie were quite slow, the pace wasn't fast , but it felt slow, and the ending left the viewers full of questions. It wasn't straightforward and full of doubts, but I had to suspend my disbelief. Apart from these weaknesses, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer(2006) is a really entertaining piece and a movie to learn a lot from watching.
In conclusion, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer(2006) is a beautiful psychological thriller that will keep you glued to your screen, the originality, the performance, and obsession. Perfume: The Story of a Murderer(2006)is certainly a movie that stays with you long after the credits roll.
I will be rating Perfume: The Story of a Murderer(2006) an 85/100 , the movie is really worth watching.
