[Comic] Review of X-Men Adventures | Escape from the Savage Land | A TV Series Comic Relic

IMG_20261011_083933_576.jpg

Hello to my dear friends at HIVE. I hope you are all doing well and, as always, enjoying this great Sunday, a weekend to make the most of the day. Today I'm here with a RELIC in my hands, a physical X-Men comic printed in 1995, a single volume designed exclusively for the TV series known today as the 90s X-Men, which is currently being remade on Disney. This series originally aired on Fox Kids and was later distributed to many television networks. If I remember correctly, in Venezuela, Televen was responsible for broadcasting this series in the country.

So, let's talk about this incredible relic I have in my hands today. Personally, I didn't know a comic of the series existed until I had it in my possession. I don't want to focus too much on the story of the chapter. If you watched the series, you'll clearly remember this episode. You remember when Wolverine goes to Savage Island to look for Javier, Jane, Cyclops, and all the others imprisoned by Mysterio, who is obsessed with Cyclops and Jean in order to create the perfect mutant, whom we later know in the series as Cable. This is also interesting because this mystery is being revealed in the current series.

There are three things I want to highlight about this physical copy, because the story of X-Men #90 is undoubtedly one of the best in the saga. Personally, I don't think Morrison, with X-Men 2000, was able to surpass X-Men #90 in terms of narrative and artistry. At that time, paper and printing were newsprint-style, and some comics that maintained this format required more precision than those printed on thicker or reflective paper.

And it is precisely here that John Hebert's pencils, Pascoe and Adams' inks, and Matt Webb's colors truly shine. The artwork in this comic is exquisite to behold, featuring anatomically well-constructed superheroes with their mutant musculature, yet without the messiness that later plagued other franchises like Deadpool.

The colors contrast so well with each other throughout the action that they become so legible, so distinctive and identifiable, that you could easily forget about reading anything and simply be swept away by the visual narrative. I believe that in comics, achieving a proper balance is crucial, especially when everything is in color. If the work isn't done well, then everything can look like a noisy mess, and this is something that has been taken into account in this issue regarding the coloring.

This comic itself not only tells an essential fragment of the X-Men #90 storyline, but it is also one of those moments where all the mutants who were initially enemies, like Magneto, unite in the common cause of confronting Mysterio and his henchmen. Besides being a collector's item, not only because it dates back to the last century, but also because it comes from a now-defunct network (FOX KIDS) and was produced as a special bonus feature for the legendary X-MEN series. I hope you enjoyed this article, and I'll see you in the next post.
