Hey Scrobbles, how are you? I hope you're having a great start to the week. This time I'm bringing you another comic, this time from Marvel: Spider-Man #431 or #57, depending on where you bought it. This is a pretty special issue for me, not only because I cherish it as a precious childhood memory, but also because it's one of those crucial issues in Spider-Man's history and his fight against the symbiotes.
It was undoubtedly a great time before the movies had interfered and ruined the franchise and these great villains. Anyway, let's get to the review.
I bought this issue in Latin America, so its numbering isn't the same as the American serialization. According to the publisher, in this case Grupo Editorial Vid, they did a different serialization, calling it #57, even though it's actually #431 in the historical canon of The Amazing Spider-Man. This issue also belongs to the era when Bob Harras, one of the best editors-in-chief at Marvel, was active, and the stories were usually really good.
In this issue, the team responsible for bringing Spider-Man and his world to life includes Tom DeFalco as writer, Joe Bennett as penciler, Bud LaRosa on inks, and Bob Sharen on colors. Ralph Macchio served as editor. As mentioned, another unique aspect of this issue is that, unlike Venom, who had already inhabited other personas such as Wolverine, Carnage abandons his longtime partner Cletus Cassidy to align himself with none other than the Silver Surfer.
So imagine Peter Parker facing off against Carnage possessing the Silver Surfer's body. If Carnage already caused problems for Spider-Man, in the body of this great warrior he'll be even more fearsome and dangerous, practically forcing Peter to seek out Cassidy to take control of Carnage again. It's like saying, "The cure couldn't be worse than the disease."
This issue is packed with action and a deadly fight between a desperate Spider-Man and an extremely aggressive Symbiote eager to roam the universe. That's why Peter's decision to help Cassidy will make sense. We'll also see in this issue how one of Peter's best friends, Joe Robertson, fires Jonah at the newspaper, something that will continue in the Spider-Man Hunt saga, which begins after this issue.
Personally, my favorite Spider-Man villains are the symbiotes, and it's a shame to see how the movies have completely ruined them. Hollywood producers' eagerness to cash in on comics has led Carnage and Venom to the most shameful positions. Looking at the worst of the characters, Venom is the prime example: an evil villain turned anti-hero based on Marvel's worst "Lethal Protector" storyline. So, issue #431 is important today, not only for the Spider-Man saga in general and its canon, but also to remind us what the symbiotes truly are and will be in Parker's life: fearsome, dark, and ruthless enemies. And in this particular issue, we can see that quite clearly. There are no spoilers here, so you can read it with confidence.
