I Throw the Nuclear Bomb Into the Tar Lake and Save South Knot City | Death Stranding

0423 (1)(2).jpg

Hello gamers, how are you all doing? I hope everyone is doing great! Continuing my adventure in Death Stranding and I'm very happy to report that I finally managed to resolve the mystery of that package addressed to Fragile that kept ending in a nuclear explosion wiping out all of South Knot City. If you read my last post you already know how that situation unfolded and how confused I was the first couple of times I walked into the city perimeter and watched everything go up in a catastrophic blast. Well today we solve it, and the solution leads to one of the most interesting story sequences the game has delivered so far. Let's get into it.

Finding Fragile at the Distribution Center South of Lake Knot City

So here was the core problem I couldn't figure out initially: every single time I approached South Knot City with that package in my inventory, the whole place exploded and Sam died. No warning, no escape window, just instant destruction and a game over screen. What I didn't understand at first was that the delivery supposedly addressed to Fragile was never a real delivery at all. It was a trap, and the person who set it up was Higgs himself, working right from the heart of Lake Knot City. That guy who approached Sam personally before departure and handed over the so-called special package wasn't a Bridges employee at all. It was Higgs in disguise, and he walked right up to our face and handed us a small thermonuclear weapon primed to detonate the moment it crossed into South Knot City. Cold blooded doesn't even begin to cover it.

The solution the game eventually nudges you toward is finding Fragile at the Distribution Center located south of Lake Knot City, roughly at the midpoint between the two cities. You have to go to her private room there and trigger the meeting. Once I actually got there and the cutscene played, everything clicked into place. Fragile takes one look at the package and identifies it immediately for what it is. The two of them open it together and the moment they do, a 30 minute countdown timer activates on the weapon. Which means the relaxed investigation is immediately over and now we're in a race against the clock.

Throwing the Bomb Into the Tar Lake

With 30 minutes on the clock and a live nuclear device in my hands, the Trike was the only sensible option for getting across the terrain fast enough. Fragile points Sam toward a crater lake north of South Knot City, the same tar lake near the Junk Dealer's area that I've crossed through on previous deliveries, and that familiarity with the route helped enormously because there was absolutely no time to be figuring out navigation under pressure.

The Trike absolutely flew across the terrain. Past the MULE camp on the northern edge, down through the familiar red sandy landscape heading south, up the hill toward the lake. The game gives you what feels like a generous window but the tension of carrying a live nuke while riding a hover bike across post-apocalyptic terrain does not let you relax for even a second. Once I arrived at the lake, the game requires you to physically carry the weapon in Sam's hand rather than keeping it strapped to the cargo frame. You pull it out through the cargo management menu, hold it in one hand, wind up, and throw it. Into the tar. Into the black. Gone. And then the screen goes white and the cutscene begins.

We Learn the True Story of Higgs's Torture of Fragile

0423 (1)(17).jpg

And this is where Order No. 38 transforms from a tense action sequence into something genuinely powerful. The cutscene that plays after the bomb sinks into the tar lake takes us back in time through Fragile's memory, and what we witness is the full story of what Higgs did to her after her betrayal, though the game keeps the exact reasons for that betrayal deliberately murky for now.

0423 (1)(18).jpg

What we do see is the specific punishment Higgs imposed on her. He forced her to carry a similar thermonuclear device across a vast stretch of Timefall exposed terrain with no protective equipment and no shelter. Every second she spent under that rain aged her skin dramatically and permanently, the Timefall accelerating time against her body in the most brutal and intimate way possible. She did it anyway. She carried that bomb through all of it and threw it into a tar lake to save a city full of people who would never know what she sacrificed to protect them. The physical damage that Timefall did to her skin, the scarring that we've noticed on her character model since the moment she was introduced, all of it comes from that moment. One act of devastating selflessness that Higgs turned into a punishment.

What makes this sequence so effective is that it raises more questions than it answers. Why did she betray him in the first place? What was their relationship before everything fell apart? The game shows you the consequences of the falling out without yet showing you the cause, and that restraint is exactly the right storytelling choice. You leave this cutscene understanding Fragile far better than you did going in while simultaneously wanting to know so much more about her.

Mission Complete and Now It's Finally Time for South Knot City

With the bomb safely at the bottom of the tar lake and that extraordinary story sequence behind us, Order No. 38 is finally resolved and the path to South Knot City is clear. No more explosions waiting at the city perimeter, no more thermonuclear surprises from Higgs. Just a straightforward delivery of nine containers of emergency provisions to a city that has been through a tremendous amount and genuinely needs them. That delivery is exactly where I'm picking up in the next post, so stay tuned gamers. I hope you enjoyed today's adventure as much as I did and I'll see you very soon!
