No había ocurrido nada.

No había nadie dentro.

No felicidad.

No euforia.

Simplemente alivio.

No siempre estamos tristes.

No siempre elegimos a dónde vamos.

Hello @holos-lotus community, with this post I continue the series. I don't always have something important to say. Most days pass without memorable scenes, without sentences worth underlining, and without clear conclusions. Even so, something remains. Not as a lesson or a revelation, but as a thin layer over everyday life. That is where the idea for this series comes from: Between what happens and what I don't say.

It is not an attempt to explain myself or find meaning in everything. It is a way of observing what usually stays outside the conversation: small gestures, everyday habits, moments that are never announced but are still there.

I write from everyday life, from what can be observed. It doesn't need to be profound to be real. I'm not trying to reach conclusions or leave life lessons behind. I simply record things, like someone noting the weather without judging it.

So there will be no answers and no promises. Only small scenes, ordinary days, and a voice that observes.

The Elevator I Let Go

There are days when five minutes of solitude feel much more necessary than five minutes of conversation.

The other day I was coming home, thinking about all the things I still had to do.

I had my phone in one hand and my keys in the other.

I entered the building and heard the sound of the elevator doors opening.

I looked up.

There was a neighbor inside.

I knew him.

We had crossed paths many times.

We weren't friends, but we weren't strangers either.

The kind of neighbor you exchange a greeting with, perhaps a comment about the weather, and occasionally a brief conversation while the elevator goes up.

The doors began to close.

I was close enough to make it.

I could have walked faster.

It wouldn't have been difficult.

But I didn't.

I kept walking at the same pace.

The doors closed.

The elevator began to go up.

And I stayed there waiting for the next one.

Nothing had happened.

No one had been offended.

No one knew that I had deliberately let it go.

But while I waited, I realized why I had done it.

That day, I didn't feel like talking.

Not even a little.

It wasn't that the neighbor bothered me.

I didn't want to avoid him forever either.

I simply didn't have the energy for that little conversation that probably would have lasted less than a minute.

—Hi.

—Hi, how are you?

—Fine, and you?

—Fine.

And perhaps then a comment about the heat.

Or the rain.

Or how the electricity had been going out for several days.

Nothing important.

Nothing unpleasant.

A completely ordinary conversation.

And yet, that day, even that felt like too much.

I think there is a kind of tiredness that cannot be measured by the number of hours we've worked.

It's the tiredness of being available.

Of responding.

Of listening.

Of keeping a friendly expression.

Of participating in conversations when we have nothing to say.

Of appearing present when our mind is asking for silence.

When the next elevator arrived, the doors opened.

There was no one inside.

I stepped in.

Pressed the button for my floor.

The doors closed.

And for a few seconds, I didn't have to do anything at all.

I simply watched the numbers change.

I felt relieved.

Not happy.

Not euphoric.

Simply relieved.

I thought that perhaps we need to learn to distinguish between being alone and feeling lonely.

They are not the same thing.

Sometimes we seek company because we need to talk.

And other times we want to be alone because we need to stop responding to anyone for a while.

I also thought about how we live surrounded by small social obligations that we rarely question.

Say hello.

Smile.

Ask.

Answer.

Comment.

Seem interested.

All of that is part of living with other people.

And that's okay.

But maybe it's also okay to admit that some days we simply don't have enough energy to fulfill every one of those little expectations.

There isn't always a problem behind it.

We're not always sad.

We're not always running away from someone.

Sometimes we simply need five minutes in which nobody expects anything from us.

When I reached my floor, I stepped out of the elevator and continued with my day.

The neighbor had probably already forgotten about the encounter that never happened.

And so had I.

But I kept thinking about that small decision.

About how strange it is that even letting an elevator go can feel like a way of choosing.

We don't always choose where we're going.

But sometimes we can choose how we get there.

Sometimes letting an elevator go isn't about avoiding someone. It's about giving yourself a few minutes when nobody expects anything from you.

With this, the thirty-fourth chapter comes to an end and I say goodbye. Tell me in the comments what you thought, and if you would like to support it, it will be greatly appreciated.
