It's better to dare to live ⏳

In response to a new exercise proposed by @emiliorios, I’d like to share my thoughts on the image he posted, so that everyone can interpret it according to their own judgment. The photograph stirred up a flood of emotions in me, which I’ll share with you little by little.

To me, there are images that don’t need to explicitly tell a story to make us imagine one. This is one of them. At a quick glance, we see an elderly woman leaning out of a window. Her face is lit by the afternoon sun (or so it seems), and she has a faint smile. She doesn’t seem sad; she’s simply gazing at what’s in front of her with apparent calm.

But if we look more closely at the details, that smile—which conveys a sense of serenity and peace—might be telling us that he enjoys the simple things in life. That the wisdom gained over the years has left its mark, and that he smiles with the calmness of someone who has already lived and learned a great deal.

That’s why I feel that this woman represents a happy old age. She makes me feel like she’s someone who managed to achieve all her goals and who, despite facing so many difficulties, has reached a stage in her life where she no longer has to chase after anything or anyone. She has no worries, and that is her greatest reward: being able to relax and feel satisfied with the life she’s lived.

However, there is one element in the image that makes me feel nostalgic—but not the kind of nostalgia filled with sadness. The object I’m referring to is the window the woman is leaning out of; I find it curious that it occupies such a small space within such a large, empty wall. That “loneliness” surrounding it makes me think of everything we cannot see at first glance.

Perhaps behind the woman’s gaze lie happy memories and longing for the people who were part of her journey: family members, friends, loves, heartbreaks, places, situations, and moments that now belong to the past. Judging by her body language, it doesn’t seem to me that she’s reminiscing with sorrow, but rather with nostalgia for the path she’s traveled. That’s what gives rise to her half-smile and her gaze fixed on the horizon.

You’re probably thinking of a time when your house was full of voices. Perhaps you’re thinking of your children when they were little and playing in the yard. The window, then, could become a kind of bridge between the present and memory ⏳.

I feel her nostalgia is filled with gratitude, as if she were looking back and could say to herself, “Did you see how fast it all went by?” “But it was worth it 😁.” And that’s what the image conveys to me most of all: the importance of daring to live.

Because sometimes we spend too much time waiting for the perfect moment to do something. We hope to have more money, we wish the day were longer, we want more experience and more knowledge. That’s why, when I look at this woman, I sense that her calmness comes from someone who won’t regret what she didn’t do. When she was afraid, she took the plunge anyway so she wouldn’t later berate herself with the question, “Why didn’t I do it?”

I like to think that, when she had a chance, she made the most of it. And she loved the people she loved and said what she needed to say. She pursued some dreams and allowed herself to make mistakes along the way.

Or perhaps the woman is waiting for someone—a beloved person who will appear at any moment at the end of the street. And in the meantime, she stands there looking out the window, feeling the warmth of the sun on her face and simply enjoying being alive.

I think that's what makes the image so moving to me. It doesn't show a grand scene or an extraordinary event. It just shows a woman standing by a window. But behind that little smile, there seems to be a whole life full of incredible and unforgettable experiences.

Let's say that's the lesson this image teaches me: someday, we, too, will look back. Hopefully, when that moment comes, we'll be able to do so with the same serenity she shows us in the image. Hopefully, we'll be able to remember it all without asking ourselves, "What if…?"

Because life goes by whether we like it or not.

We might as well dare to live!
