Antes de llegar a los cines, He-Man y los Amos del Universo conquistaron el mundo en la década de los 80 gracias a una de las series animadas más variadas de la televisión. La trama era sencilla, pero original: todo ocurría en un planeta llamado Eternia donde la magia y la tecnología convivían, castillos medievales de piedra, naves espaciales, tecnología cibernética y rayos láser. Todos estos elementos se salían por completo de los esquemas habituales de la época.
Además, el carisma de los villanos y lo estrafalario de todos los personajes, le daba a la serie un universo rarísimo, empezando por el protagonista con ese peinado y vestuario tan particular y gracioso que tenía. También, está el icónico Skeletor con su cara de calavera, su personalidad grandilocuente y gestos exagerados. Lo más divertido era cuando insultaba a sus secuaces por su incompetencia, pues siempre lo hacía de una manera cómica.
Algo destacable y súper raro de ver por aquellos tiempos era que, al final de cada episodio, He-Man rompía la cuarta pared, hablándole directamente a la cámara para compartir una pequeña reflexión o moraleja con los niños. Aunque la trama no era compleja, lograron crear un universo fantástico que marcó la infancia de muchos, incluyendo la mía a pesar de que la serie no era de mi época.
Para esta nueva adaptación que se estrenó este mismo año 2026, el director Travis Knight asumió el reto con la idea de que tanto el elenco como la película tomaran con seriedad la esencia emocional de la historia, abrazando la naturaleza disparatada del clásico original.
La Trama: El Viaje a Eternia
La historia nos transporta al planeta de Eternia, un universo mágico y tecnológico a la vez. Todo comienza con un Adam de diez años inexperto y sumamente ingenuo, el cual lleva el peso de asumir su destino como el protector del reino, empuñando la Espada de Poder para convertirse en He-Man. Desde esa corta edad se siente menos que el resto y busca desesperadamente la aprobación de su padre.
Luego, el reino sufre un ataque liderado por Skeletor, el cual se apodera de Eternia y Adam debe ser enviado a la Tierra con la Espada para salvarse y proteger su legado. Durante quince años crece lejos de su origen, viviendo una vida normal como humano, pero sin olvidarse de nada ni de nadie, lo que crea en él una nostalgia permanente de que algo le falta.
Al final, él logra volver a su planeta para cumplir con su misión: frenar las oscuras ambiciones de Skeletor para recuperar el Castillo de Grayskull. En el camino se reencuentra con aquellos héroes que siempre mantuvo en su memoria, luchando junto a ellos en contra de los villanos más icónicos con el objetivo de salvar a su mundo de la ruina.
Nostalgia colorida y aciertos
Un gran acierto en la película fue el rescatar la esencia de la serie original, apostando por una escenografía vibrante y colorida. Si bien es cierto que se pueden apreciar algunos errores, en líneas generales fueron bastante acertados, se notó el esfuerzo en crear las naves lo más parecidas posibles a la caricatura.
También, fue una verdadera sorpresa ver el esmero en diseñar el vestuario de los personajes exactamente como el de los dibujos animados, dignos de cualquier fanático de los años ochenta.
Otro detalle a destacar es el elenco actoral, porque ensamblar a personajes tan estrafalarios y diferentes en una misma narrativa cinematográfica no es nada fácil. Honestamente, antes de ver la película pensé que sería un total desastre por esto mismo, pero me sorprendió que lograran encajarlos a todos.
Jared Leto como Skeletor se llevó la mayoría de los aplausos. Lejos de buscar un calco exacto del personaje, Leto abrazó la naturaleza exagerada y teatral del villano, logrando un equilibrio perfecto que rinde honor al personaje animado. De hecho, regaló momentos divertidos que me sacaron una sonrisa por lo inesperado, destacando las escenas de Skeletor en una oficina de recursos humanos y luego haciendo ejercicio en el gimnasio.
A todo esto, se le suma la banda sonora, donde participó el legendario Brian May guitarrista de Queen. Fue otro gran acierto, impregnando cada escena de una energía rockera y épica que le quedó como anillo al dedo al largometraje.
No todo puede ser perfecto…
En cuanto a las debilidades, el guion me pareció flojo y muy predecible en varios tramos, los guionistas pudieron arriesgar más con la trama para darle mayor profundidad, fuerza dramática y un giro distinto al típico del “héroe que debe escapar de su reino y vivir una vida normal” tan usado en Marvel.
Es cierto que He-Man y el resto de los personajes siempre han tenido un toque ingenuo, por lo que cambiar radicalmente la narrativa habría hecho que pierda su identidad. No obstante, con un universo tan bizarro como el de Eternia, pudieron atreverse mucho más en lugar de irse por lo seguro.
Algunas escenas fueron exageradamente largas y los chistes muy recurrentes en la película, hicieron que se interrumpiera un poco el flujo de la fantasía y la aventura. Un ejemplo de esto lo podemos notar con los personajes de Fisto y Ram-Man que quedaron reducidos a un simple chiste sin aprovechar su potencial. Eso no me gustó para nada.
Al final, nos encontramos ante un film que deja sentimientos encontrados y opiniones muy diversas. Por un lado, es una película que van a disfrutar los niños por ese despliegue visual que describí antes y su humor absurdo. Sin embargo, un público adulto y, especialmente, la generación de los 80 la han repudiado casi por completo y es entendible la razón.
No es que sea mala, pero tampoco es totalmente buena. Creo que pudieron hacer un mejor trabajo y pulir más algunos detalles importantes en el guion. También, pienso que debieron ponerle de nombre “He-Man” directamente a la película y no “Los Maestros del Universo” para evitar confusiones. A pesar de todo, cumple con entretener y dejarnos una sonrisa.

The Origin of the Legend: From the Eighties to the Big Screen
Before making it to theaters, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe conquered the world in the 1980s thanks to one of the most diverse animated series on television. The plot was simple, but original: everything took place on a planet called Eternia, where magic and technology coexisted—medieval stone castles, spaceships, cybernetic technology, and laser beams. All of these elements completely broke away from the usual conventions of the time.
In addition, the charisma of the villains and the eccentricity of all the characters gave the series an incredibly bizarre universe, starting with the protagonist himself, with that very particular and funny hairstyle and outfit. Then there was the iconic Skeletor, with his skull face, grandiose personality, and exaggerated gestures. The funniest moments were when he insulted his henchmen for their incompetence, as he always did so in a comedic way.
One remarkable and extremely unusual detail for that time was that, at the end of each episode, He-Man would break the fourth wall, speaking directly to the camera to share a small reflection or moral lesson with the children. Although the plot was not complex, they managed to create a fantastic universe that shaped the childhoods of many people, including mine, even though the series was not from my generation.
For this new adaptation, which was released this very year, in 2026, director Travis Knight took on the challenge with the idea that both the cast and the film should take the emotional essence of the story seriously while embracing the absurd nature of the original classic.
The Plot: The Journey to Eternia
The story takes us to the planet of Eternia, a universe that is both magical and technological. Everything begins with an inexperienced and extremely naive ten-year-old Adam (Nicholas Galitzine), who carries the burden of fulfilling his destiny as the protector of the kingdom, wielding the Power Sword to become He-Man. At such a young age, he feels inferior to everyone else and desperately seeks his father's approval.
Then, the kingdom is attacked by Skeletor, who takes over Eternia, and Adam must be sent to Earth with the Sword in order to survive and protect his legacy. For fifteen years, he grows up far from his origins, living a normal life as a human, but never forgetting anything or anyone, which creates within him a permanent feeling that something is missing.
In the end, he manages to return to his planet to fulfill his mission: stopping Skeletor's dark ambitions and reclaiming Castle Grayskull. Along the way, he reunites with the heroes he always kept in his memory, fighting alongside them against the most iconic villains with the goal of saving his world from ruin.
Colorful Nostalgia and Strengths
One of the film's biggest strengths was its ability to recapture the essence of the original series by opting for vibrant and colorful production design. While it is true that some mistakes can be noticed, overall, they got many things right, and the effort to make the spaceships look as similar as possible to those in the cartoon was evident.
It was also a real surprise to see the care that went into designing the characters' costumes to match those from the animated series almost exactly, making them worthy of any fan of the eighties.
Another detail worth highlighting is the cast, because bringing together such eccentric and different characters within the same cinematic narrative is not easy at all. Honestly, before watching the movie, I thought it would be a complete disaster for this very reason, but I was surprised that they managed to make them all fit together.
Jared Leto as Skeletor received most of the applause. Rather than trying to create an exact copy of the character, Leto embraced the villain's exaggerated and theatrical nature, achieving a perfect balance that honors the animated character. In fact, he delivered some funny moments that made me smile because of how unexpected they were, especially the scenes featuring Skeletor in a human resources office and later working out at the gym.
On top of all this, there is the soundtrack, which featured legendary Queen guitarist Brian May. This was another great success, filling every scene with a rock-infused and epic energy that suited the film perfectly.
Not Everything Can Be Perfect…
As for its weaknesses, I found the screenplay rather weak and very predictable in several parts. The writers could have taken more risks with the story to give it greater depth, dramatic strength, and a different twist than the typical “hero who must escape his kingdom and live a normal life” storyline so often used by Marvel.
It is true that He-Man and the rest of the characters have always had a certain naivety to them, so radically changing the narrative would have caused it to lose its identity. Nevertheless, with a universe as bizarre as Eternia, they could have dared to go much further instead of playing it safe.
Some scenes were excessively long, and the recurring jokes throughout the film disrupted the flow of the fantasy and adventure somewhat. One example can be seen with the characters Fisto and Ram-Man, who were reduced to little more than a simple joke without making use of their potential. I really did not like that.
In the end, we are left with a film that evokes mixed feelings and very different opinions. On the one hand, it is a movie that children will enjoy because of the visual spectacle I described earlier and its absurd humor. However, adult audiences, and especially the generation that grew up in the 80s, have almost completely rejected it, and the reason is understandable.
It's not that it's a bad movie, but it isn't entirely good either. I think they could have done a better job and polished some important details in the screenplay. I also think they should have simply named the movie “He-Man” instead of “Masters of the Universe” to avoid confusion. Despite everything, it succeeds in entertaining us and leaving us with a smile.
