What is the Jevons paradox? Demand for Software Engineers may increase, not decrease in the short term due to AI. Building code is going to skyrocket.

William Stanley Jevons was a 19th-century economist who observed that the consumption of resources, such as coal, had actually risen sharply rather than fallen, due to optimizations and efficiency gains.

Applied to the AI era, this could mean that even more software engineers will be needed in the future, since, thanks to Vibe Coding, more code is being written than ever before.

Many ideas that previously couldn’t be turned into code due to a lack of time and resources can now be implemented thanks to AI.

The assumption is that code output will explode in the AI era. Much more code will be implemented than ever before.

In the short term, this could even increase the demand for developers, but in the long term, AI agents could take over the entire development process including the supervision of the coding sub-agents.

Nevertheless, there seems to be a sort of freeze in the job market right now, even for software developers.

Why do you think that is? Is it due to the increased efficiency of AI, or because companies can’t keep up and grow as quickly as AI development? For example, are they simply managing the existing code with fewer employees instead of expanding?

I think its because they are generating too much code, and someone is going to need to verify that code before it can be considered safe. You can consider a platform like Steam that sells games. After AI, there are a ton of games released, but they need to make sure the game is safe, and other things before it can go up.

I heard software engineers heavily use Claude AI in their workplace.

I think it has alot to do with AI. Companies now a days don't need much people. They are exploring AI to do the job.

  • For me companies are in adjustment period with the AI development

I think AI development will continue to grow in the future

    fear and GREED.

AI companies are taking on significant debt, and that is shifting the paradigm. They need to find ways to cut costs.
